How do you go about checking references for a loanee when lending your horse out or do most people only loan to someone that they know/know of. My husband is trying to decide whether to loan his 8 year homebred 16.2HH out or sell him. We know of someone locally looking for a bold horse to do the x country part of a senior tetrathlon on but have also seen a wanted for loan advert where someone is looking for a horse for ODE/Hunter trials which is what OH would prefer him to do as we enjoy seeing him compete. Any suggestions on how you go a about checking that the person is genuine etc gratefully received as there seem to be so many horror stories re loaning.

I think that's a hard one. So many people lie these days it would be hard to know if the references were genuine. I have a horse on loan and when i went to meet his owner i took along my certificates to prove that i could look after a horse properly etc. Out of about six people i was chosen so i think someone that can prove their knowledge and experience is the best way to go. Also, i would ask the persons reasons for wanting a loan horse and always go with your gut instinct. I now have a wonderful horse and a very good friend of four years out of my loan experience so don't lose hope there are genuine pople out there! Good luck

The girl loaning my horse is currently in equine college based near me, I just got a good vibe from her. She clicked with my horse and shows him 100% love and affection, which is what Im looking for.
I go down and check on him regularly - I think this is the BIGGEST downfall of most loaners - Check on your horses!!

This girl has brought my horse on well, I had no interest in schooling - she has got him good at that and he is blooming. What more can you ask for? When I am eventually in a position where I want him back, he will have benefitted from their time together as will she I hope

we always check, passport (to proove they are who they say they are), a copy of a bill (to proove address), and a reference from a good instructor who is BHS or ABRS qualified or a reference from a PC DC etc. references i always phone the person giving the reference if the loaner is genuine they should not mind!
