My horse is being referred for bone scan to diagnose a hind limb lameness. Rossdale's website states;

"All horses coming for lameness examinations should be shod to allow for repeated trotting. The shoes should not be in danger of coming loose and it is preferable for the horse not to have been reshod in the three days prior to examination."

and

"All horses should be shod, preferably in the shoes that they have been wearing in the weeks up to referral as this can reveal the cause of lameness whilst new shoes may not. Unshod horses often become foot-sore when trotted up for lameness examination. This can be confusing and complicate the diagnosis of the true lameness."

Phil has never been shod or needed shoes. He was trimmed a week ago by the farrier. They won't require me to put shoes on, will they? I'll ask my vet when he calls back anyway, but in the mean time, just wondering :)

I do not think so.

Ensure you explain to them that he does not get foot sore with repeated trotting.

I spent the week at Newmarket E.H watching lameness exams, bone scans, xrays etc and there were lots of horses with no shoes/half sets, not to mention extremely poor shoeing.

No they won't expect you to shoe a horse not normally shod. They just want to ensure that you keep things the same for the lameness work up. They probably get a lot of competition horses which it would be fair to say are usually shod. Good luck my WB went to AHT for the same thing!

Phone and ask, I took a barefoot horse to the RVC for full work up, the obnoxious ortho vet wouldn't even look at him without shoes...

My normally fully shod horse went to Rossdales for investigation to reoccurring infection to hock and I don't think he was shod at the time and if he was there were no hind shoes on for sure. He certainly didn't have a full set. I wouldn't worry. Ps there's a little shop in the village that does a good bacon sandwich if you don't have separate transport to get into Newmarket!

They called me back today and I mentioned it, they said it's no problem which is a relief! Fingers crossed they can figure out what's wrong :)
