My horse is being referred to Leahurst for some investigation into her breathing. Anyway Ive been told I will have to pay £750.00 up front. Is this normal? I didnt think it would be that much and that the insurance would pay it.
 
Yes it is quite normal, every hospital I have had anything to do with has a similar policy because otherwise some people don't pay and the cost goes up for everyone to counter this.

I know it can seem a bit off putting, but I can't imagine you'll have any trouble getting any money that isn't spent back, Leahurst is quite reputable!
 
It is unfortunately, when my horse was getting booked in for scintigraphy I was quoted £1200 to £1500 which I was told I would have to pay up front even though my insurance had pre agreed to pay. I went to the Royal Dick vet school at Edinburgh instead and they claimed directly off my insurance. I wasn't able to pay that amount up front without taking a loan out so I just had a chat with my vets that were referring my horse.
 
When Lucy was refured to Liphook they didn't ask for any money up front. They did ask if she was insured. (I laughed and pointed out she was atleast 19.) Lucy was an emergancy refural though so i don't know if that makes any differance.
 
Bell Equine and Rossdales are fantastic :) they let the insurance co pay directly.

Liphook on the other hand :( even though my lad was insured I had to pay the whole bill upfront before I could even see him let alone take him home

I could understand if I was insured with a certain company but I am with Petplan who have been wonderful. Sadly I have had 5 (yes five) claims in just over a year!! That's a lot of money in excesses alone!!
 
Thats a ridiculous amount and Im whinging about getting £750.00. Im preying insurance will cough up. Tho not sure what they can do for her at leahurst.

My bill was a similar amount, had to beg & borrow the money from relatives & pay them back when the insurance paid me :( it just adds to the worry of it all.

I took my friends mare & foal to Liphook as an emergency last Thursday, they are operating on the mare tomorrow. I visited them earlier today & she looks so sad bless her. To make matters worse her poor owner is stuck in Portugal and she left a fit healthy mare & now this has happened she is distraught at not being able to get back.

mine is having surgery Tue morning so at the moment I'm just hoping I will be collecting him Thur evening and not worrying about the money. Luckily I have some nice friends with spare credit cards but I thought the whole point of insurance was not having to come up with that kind of money! TBH i dont care as long as they fix him though :( I haven't visited as it will just upset me and he's so sensitive I dont want to upset him :( He's been there since Wed :(
 
Try to keep your chin up & don't feel bad about not visiting, my own lad was there in January with perotinitis & I didn't dare visit him or he too would have got upset. He was there for 10 days :( so nice to get them home.

What op is your lad having? Is it one of the ponies in your profile picture?
 
yeah, it's the orange pony in my sig. He's having arthroscopy on his stifle. Has been lame for a month :( He is very sensitive about everything and I know if I go see him he'll get stressed out but i miss him loads.
 
Yes it's horrible when they are away, hope the surgery goes well. good luck, keep us updated :) Sadly I have had a lot of lameness problems this past year, things are looking up now (fingers crossed) hopefully won't be too long before you can say the same xx

My goodness :( What a worry :( I have been very fortunate, the 3 veterinary practices that have treated my horses for some expensive treatments have always waited for my insurance to pay.

Don't worry I've had numerous horses at liphook and have been allowed to take them without settling the whole bill (have been between £1500 and £5000). They take you straight to accounts before you can see them which is a little off putting but if you genuinely can't pay they don't hold them hostage. We came to an agreement where I paid half and then settled with the insurance company later.
 
They've said she may have to have a hobday but have taken a sample of fluid in lungs for COPD. Im not sure what to do with her now if she cant compete with her COPD and they cant do anything for her COPD. I dearly love this horse but am so fed up with it all.

Lucy has had COPD for years. Well since i bought her 12 years ago. With carefull management i have managed to controll it and she has compeated in Showing, Dressage, Endurance rides of up to and inclu 80km and she used to hunt atleast once a week. Hope this is of some help. I don't know the full story about your horse so sorry if i'm speaking out of turn.
 
totally in shock! i am up in scotland and have been to dick vet and lanark hospitals, never have i had to pay upfront. in fact i have been invoiced for the livery months later. god knows what i would have to do. hope all goes well for you x
