Referring to a nice horse as "sexy"...

am sure people do things with cars though too,

have never been called a chav before
blush.gif

Ashgrove I think thats a bit weird too

See I think I couldn't say attactive as that has more actual sexual/human meaning to me than sexy and imply attraction.

i'm of the generation where sexy means 'i'd hump it'... so no... i would never refer to my horse as sexy. he is not a sexual being to me.

i've got a friend who refers to her (baby) son as 'sexy' and kisses with him as 'snogs'.... i find it very uncomfortable to listen to. x

[ QUOTE ]
Ah so because its a living creature it shouldn't be described as sexy. I think in the modern world you have to accept that meanings and implications of words, change. Your definition of sexy is not the same as the younger generation and you should not use your definition to define what others mean by using the word.

[/ QUOTE ]

Damn prescriptivists.
grin.gif

I think the word has changed, if my friends were to describe a bloke as sexy, they would get laughed at. Whereas a car is more likley to get the description.

Odd? Of course.

Calm down

I am completely calm but your suggestion that people who use the word are linked somehow to beastiality is a little ridiculous...

Ok its just plain ridiculous.

Haha, my goodness, it was a totally tongue in cheek comment. Most posters on this thread have managed to see it as pretty lighthearted, and not an actual suggestion that HHOers engage in illegal sexual activity!!

skippy we are having a very important debate

I know, but every "very important debate" leaves me with crows claws at the side of my eyes through laughing.

[ QUOTE ]

I was in the drs waiting room a while back, there was a young woman with a 6 month(ish) baby boy on her knee and she kept calling him her sexy little man.

I was completely shocked and disgusted at that.

Maybe I've had a sheltered life.

[/ QUOTE ]

I would say so yes.

So long as somebody doesn't actually mean that they are sexually attracted to the car/horse/child, which lets be honest, they almost certainly don't, then I don't see what is disturbing or creepy about it.

Its even in the dictionary:

[ QUOTE ]

1. concerned predominantly or excessively with sex; risqué: a sexy novel.
2. sexually interesting or exciting; radiating sexuality: the sexiest professor on campus.
3. excitingly appealing; glamorous: a sexy new car.

[/ QUOTE ]

Sexy is a word I use in a lighthearted way about all number of things - horses, cars, random inanimate objects - and believe me I don't have any odd sexual perversions! I know lots of people who describe their horse as kissing or snogging them if they lick them - its a jokey word.

Frankly I don't see the big deal - don't see why people can't take the word as it is meant rather than getting all het up by applying a meaning obviously not intended to a lighthearted comment..

PMSL - I wouldn't use the word in relation to my horse. But then I wouldn't use it for a car or an inanimate object. In fact I wouldn't use it as an adjective at all.

I have however used it to describe my mare's mood. Eg 'acting all sexy' when in season (when she's supposed to be in foal). Is that worse!

But then I also object to it when people refer to me as my horse's 'mum'. Last I looked, my horse's mum weighed nearly a ton & was covered in fur. That is definitely not me!

I think its just an good example of how the English language changes through generations, some people maybe offended by it, while the younger ones perhaps use the phrase quite a lot, as a compliment, either we moan about it or get with the times lol

I call both my horse and my dog my smexy little men, doesn't mean I would jump into bed with either of them. Well the dog shares my bed but I assure you it's totally platonic

Am totally with spiral here, saves me typing it
grin.gif

I do not think anything of it, i often give my cat kisses and say i am giving them 'snogs'! Its just a word, it depends what you mean by it and what context as to if it is creepy IMO.
I tend to use the word stunning with horses, i have used the variation smexy before, picked that one up from the forums and do not see it as weird, i simply see it as saying a horse is a nice looking animal for example.
Interesting debate though

[ QUOTE ]
Well if a car company can run an ad showing some brainless arm candy asking to be shown a car that is "drive sexy" I would guess that "sexy" these days means just about anything.

That's my sister you're talking about

ok ok after reading all through this one and thinking 'nuts'... I thought some more. I'm 33, and most definately NOT a chav... but I realised (ok, OH told me) I have been known to refer to my old car as a 'sexy beast of a motor', and also tell P he has a 'sexy bum' while hugging it. Ok. THERAPIIISSSTTTTTTTT

Maybe not serious, but it is an interesting point.

Young people might wince at calling another person 'sexy' but will happily use the word in all kinds of other contexts, and we seem to have a new euphemism for various other sexual acts or descriptions every day.

Is this indicative of a generation who believe themselves to be bold and brave, but who are actually coy and hedging around the use of language?

i call my horse sexy and a friend said her horse was sexy like mine. i don't see sexy as having anything to do with sex at all unless its used by old men. i do think its a girls thing though i would find it a bit weird if a man called a mare sexy. the more i write it though the weirder it sounds but i would also call a car or a phone sexy, it doesn't mean anything weird to me at all

Ooh, I love linguistics
smile.gif
I've never thought of it that way, although it might be the case. My young office tends to refer to attractive people as 'hot' and certainly have no qualms about doing so
wink.gif
We tend to refer to people who are really NOT hot as sexy...
