So just to answer some questions/statements; I didn’t and wouldn’t go against the owner. The instructor used to ride and compete this mare, so knows what she’s capable of generally. The owner raised a concern, but then when the instructor said she’d be fine, told me to crack on and do it. Which then made me feel even more pressured to do it.
While I only jump her round small courses, I’ve had lessons about 5 years ago from this instructor when I was happily jumping 110cm on my own horse, and the instructor would’ve jumped this mare round working hunter courses close to that height at about the same time. So I wonder if she just misjudged how long it had been since we were individually capable of it. It was a steeplechase fence, so about as forgiving as it can be.
And yes, the horse is not eventing fit, but only twice did we do more than one fence/ combo at a time, so maybe she wasn’t as able to see the signs of tiredness as well as I could feel them. So again, that’s on me to really stand up for myself, which I will do in future.
All in all it’s been a valuable learning experience! I think it’s easy to see what to do when you’ve had time to reflect, but in the moment when you’re being told to go straight away, it’s harder to make the right call. I hadn’t thought that in signing up for a mini class that I’d be put in a situation like this.
