Finally got the chance to go and ride this evening as got rid of the kids for a few hrs, Havent done any grid work for ages so can anyone tell me the distance in human strides for a bounce, 1 stride and 2 stride jump please.
Also when doing canter and trot poles what are the distances? Many thanks!

Horse or pony?

Horse (I work in metres as I know one of my strides is one metre)

1 stride = 4 metres = 4 human strides, you add 2 for take off and 2 for landing so

1 stride double = 8 strides

2 stride double = 12 strides

Bounce = 3 to 3.5strides depending on horse and what you are jumping

Of course, you can take a human stride or two out of the first two if you want to make the horse work harder or if you are trotting in/if the fences are not big :)

what would you suggest weezy for a 14.2hh.
I do a bit of grid work with my instructor...but always forget to ask the distances! i also really enjoy it and ponio does too so would be nice to do it out of lessons!

Bear in mind that you might want to shorten the distance to produce a better jump with the horse using his shoulders more. Also an ascending oxer encourages them to use their shoulders and a descending to pick up their hind legs. An 'A' frame will encourage them to pick up their legs. I usually do a lot of grid work but often use the same format - two bounces to a double, the second part of which I make into an oxer with variations on distances each time. I also use poles in between a double (so if seven human strides then a pole placed @ 3.5 strides) will make a bounce. As a rule you should only have a bounce at the start of the grid unless the horse is an experienced horse, but in practice I've never found it a problem. Just be wary that if the horse jumps down the grid with increasing speed you may have to alter your distances to prevent him rushing.
