Refund from Farrier

I can't understand why he would wait 90 minutes though? that is a bit odd. I'd reclaim the money off the yard, it seems they caused the issue.

It all sounds very odd and OP isn't clear.
I understood that OP tried to cancel the farrier but he said he would come anyway and then asked for payment in advance - that sounds peculiar. I also understood that the horse was hidden by the yard when farrier got there, so goodness knows why he spend 90 mins on the yard. Then I thought that the OP had moved the horse to a different yard and is now trying to get the farrier to shoe the horse there.
I would write off the £90, find a new farrier and be glad that I am off that yard. If you are not paid up at the old yard I would knock £90 off the bill, before paying it.

I was upfront with the farrier. I told him I was leaving my current yard and they were making everything difficult and he would most likely find it difficult. I told him this, and that I coudnt be there to attend as the YO wouldn't let me! I am not going into the yard politics the place was hell.
He replied by saying he would HAPPILY shoe her on her own and that he didnt care about yard politics. Rings me when he has nearly arrived saying he wants payment before he does her. I pay him straight away plus a 10£ extra as a thank you!
Get a phone call the next day saying he was there for nearly 2 hours and couldn't get to the horse but would happily shoe her once she was moved.
I move her 5 days later.
I have spent the last 2 weeks trying to be rebooked. First told he was on holiday but would happily book me in next coming week. Sent 3 texts in total with a few days gap asking if there was a slot available - this has been two week period. doing this. Was never told I would have to pay another 80£ for another appointment as he never mentioned oh, by the way you will have to pay more money as my time was wasted.
He choose to be on site for over 90 minutes- he said he would happily travel to her. Now when I got fed up, he replies 5 minutes within a text.
I get he needs to be compensated for wasting his time but he choose to be there for so long without contacting me. He KNEW about the situation and still wanted to proceed. And kept saying he would shoe her once she was moved!
He need to work for a living I get that, but what about me as the customer who was ignored and uninformed and promised?

Personally none of it is a subject for texts, I'd pick the phone up and actually talk to him. I think you are being unreasonable, he's offered a partial refund. Just because he couldn't complete the job was not his fault. I do feel for you as the yard sounds hell, but then hell freezing over would have to happen before anyone dictated to me on whether I could attend my horse for my farrier. I'm more amazed at that than the farrier to be honest.

I'd chalk it up to experience and move on and hopefully never allow a yard to bully you like this again. I've never heard anything quite like it,a yard hiding a horse from a professional!

You don't really understand that he needs to work for a living, though, do you - as you expect him to spend 90 to 120 minutes out of a day unpaid, not to mention his travel time, petrol/diesel expenses etc.

I can't believe you asked him for the money back - and are now giving him a hard time. If I were the farrier, I'd block you.

I think the farrier should honor his agreement to book a slot at an alternative date or give a full refund

From reading the post, he was aware there was a yard issue and still wanted to go, he did (what?) for 90 mins? if the horse wasnt there and he knew it could be 'difficult', he had the option to just leave.

Holidays and other clients aside, surely its good practice to look through your appointments and see a slot, even if thats 3 weeks away, atleast there's a booked slot and a happier informed client, or atleast just reply to messages/phone calls.

He cant be a very in demand farrier if he can sit around twiddling his thumbs for 90 minutes between clients? I have a wonderfully understanding and patient farrier but I cant imagine he would have spent (wasted!) more than 30 minutes of his time on a set up like that! Very odd story altogether but if it is as OP describes then you owe the man his money and that is the bottom line. If your horse hasn't been shod not his fault, probably something you should be taking up with the people you were paying yard fess to.

I've read something similar to this recently, but can't remember if it was on here or FB. Anyway it all sounds very odd. I would let the man keep his money and be happy I was on a new yard.

Farrier came to do the job and tried to fulfil his part of the contract but was prevented by the YO. Your YO should pay.

^^^ This. I'm a YO and wouldn't ever dream of hindering any professional coming to the yard; my livery uses a different farrier and vets to the one I use but there's never, and should never, be a problem with this.

Your farrier attended and was prepared to shoe your horse but was prevented from doing so, blatently it would appear so.

The Buck stops with the YO basically. How very unprofessional, nay downright childish!

Personally I would move.

This is odd on a few levels. It sounds like your farrier was insistent that he came even though you said it would be a problem. When he got there and couldn't 'find' the horse did he not call you to explain? In all honesty I cant work out why he would spend 90mins there!

Also asking you to pay upfront is odd. Is ge your regular farrier?

I take it that you have moved yards now? Tbh I think I would accept his offer of a partial refund and book another farrier.

This is what I would also do. It does seem odd that he hung around for 90 minutes. My old Farrier would have left after 15 minutes.
