Didn't want to step into another thread and hijack, so thought i would start a new one.

I have been wracking my brains trying to think of a nice show name for my girl
but until reading the other thread regarding show names and registered names, it hadn't occured to me that using the horses registered name was advertising the breeding etc.,

She is very well bred, but her registered name does not relate to that of her parents or have the breeders name as a prefix, I have no desire to change her registered name, this is what we call her at the yard and on a daily basis, but i did want to give her a nice name for the ring when we go competing - is this wrong, should i just stick with her registered name?, which in case your wondering is her name is Nautika :)

Check the rules of whatever discipline you wish to compete in.

Certainly for breed classes they are shown in their registered names but as we're not currently affiliated for any of the disciplines I'm not sure what current rules are (personally I keep to registered names as it's simpler that way!!)

Thank you for your reply - if she was to compete in breed classes it would be riding club level and i would have to choose a Foreign Breeds class, if there was one.

Once she is backed and being ridden, we will hopefully compete at Riding Club Level.

Strictly speaking there is nothing to stop you using a different name as her show name at unaffiliated competitions, but for all affiliated competition you have to use the horse's registered name as it appears on the passport. I don't know how much of a dim view a RC would take of using a name different from a horse's passported name.

ps I really like your horse's registered name :)

DabDab - Thank you we really like it as well, but im so used to unaffiliated competitions/local shows, where anything goes, but im seriously considering now just calling her Nautika - i doubt theres many others with that name

It had never occured to me until now, that these posh names you hear to affiliated shows, are the horses proper registered names :o who's a numpty then?
