Hi everyone.
Our foal, Dream is approaching five months of age and we are now starting to think about registering her for her passport. She is booked in to get microchipped when the vet next visits for vaccines but the vet did mention that she would need a special microchip for wetherbys so to let them know before the visit if that’s the case. My question is where would I apply for a passport? Her dam is thoroughbred and registered with Wetherbys and stallion is a Zangersheide. This is our first foal and we are unsure of the correct process. Does it matter where she is registered? If anyone could share and advice for us that would be really great. Thank you ?

You have 2 main sport horse stud books in this country- SHBGB and AES. It's largely irrelevant which you choose, unless you're interested in mare grading etc in the future. Just pick one and print off their ID form for the vet to fill in then send it off with the covering certificate

Get organised and choose one, with our breed society you have to have the DNA packets sent from them and you need them for the vet to complete on the day
Just a heads up

I went with Breeders Elite. I didn’t need to do DNA with a covering certificate from a registered stallion and the foal still with the mare. The vet provided the microchip… but you could also order them from the PIO.

I printed out the form from the website, vet filled it out, sent it in and hey presto, all sorted!!

We have usually used the stud book of the sire or dam depending on which works best for us. Zangersheide is very easy. No DNA test needed if stallion was Zangersheide. The people in the office are super helpful.

We would not do age classes anyway but I think there may now be a restriction if a horse is registered in a foreign stud book. If you want a UK stud book, Breeders Elite is easy.
