Hi everyone,

Twigs passport is simply 'bay filly'. In the future she is hopefully going to be competing in byeh classes and (hopefully) BE. will I need to register her an official name with wetherbys in the future for this sort of competiton or is it not necessary? I'm not sure of the exact cost of registering names but i can imagine its not very cheap.

Oh and also, if anyone can think of any nice show names for twiggy I would be very grateful! she is by grey desire x portite sophie.

When I worked on a TB stud we had to have all the foals DNA tested and Microchipped within a month of their birth. B***dy hard work considering they all lived out through the summer and hadn't been handled at all!! Point is, if you do have to reg. with weatherby's will you have to have her microchipped etc? We didn't often name them as they usually went by the age of three, but the one gelding's reg. name which we kept didn't cost an awful lot, but I'm afraid I can't remember exactly how much. I just went on their web-site but can't find anything about it. Perhaps the BHS can help you.

In 2004 it cost me £75 to register my mare with them as a non TB horse.

she had been registered with them at birth, microchipped and issued with a passport which simply said her DOB, colour sex and parentage.

Basically I paid £75 to give her a name and in return her passport was sent back with a sticky label over the original entry which simply said 22 June 2002, Chestnut, Filly - in otherwords I bought the most expensive sticky label in the world

I wanted to have her registered in order to compete and have her graded as a broodmare so had no option but to pay.

How old is Twiggy now cos the cost alters for different ages? Last year it was 81.50 for under 2; 116.50 for 2 & 3 year olds; 4 and upwards was 105.50 - I have the form in front of me cos I was going to add my Twiggy to the broodmare register and she has to be named before she can go on that.
There was a post the other day but I can't think whose it was, could have been Forrest and it was all covered in that, not sure that Worried1 didn't answer in that too.
If you think you might want to put her to a TB in the future or try to grade her, it makes sense to name her properly because you won't be able to register her stock otherwise and that would knock their value a lot as they'd only be allowed onto the Non Thoroughbred Register regardless of the fact they would be full TBs, simply because the mare hadn't been named properly with Weatherbys!

Hi I phoned weatherbys last week on this very question , cost is £109.50 for my 5 yo mare to have her name added to her passport and this ONLY needs to be done if you intend to put her into training and enter a race or breed a foal that you want to race otherwise just write the name in

So did I! They told me exactly the same that you only need to register a name if the horse is going into training or you will breed from her - for anything else just write the name in the passport. If your horse has been in training though, I'd have thought it would already be named ?
