Registering with two vets

I've read a few times on the forum that owners are registered with two vets. How do you manage that on a practical basis? Doesn't the second vet want all records sent to them?
I'm possibly moving my pony to a new yard. I'd like to keep our present vet as he's very experienced and is pragmatic about what my pony should be put through in term of possible treatments.
But-he'd be at the limit of the areas he covers and I'd be worried about the time I might have to wait in an emergency.

I've been registered with two in the past - I was on a large yard where there was a monthly clinic you could book into for things like vaccinations, weight checks or minor concerns.

I've just rung up second and said that I'd like to register and they asked if they could access his records and they did.

I did explain to the first vet's that I'd be registering with the second - I think I worded it like 'The YM prefers them to be registered with them just in case of emergencies if I'm away etc' and they were fine with it.

No sadly as far as a buyer is concerned there is no legal requirement to link histories and vets together. Read this https://forums.horseandhound.co.uk/...a-potential-buyer.832714/page-2#post-15365730

i’m registered with two - “my” vets are amazing and would be my go to, but the 2nd are the “yard” vets and a) closer in an emergency, and b) coming out with a weigh bridge and i wanted to get in on that🤣

2nd vet just asked if i’m happy for them to contact “my” vets for their history.

I have in the past and there was no problem with it. I used a rural farm vets for vaccinations and basic routine stuff as they were very cheap, and a more expensive equine specialist for more complicated stuff as they were specialists. I also used the equine practice for proper emergencies as they were closer. Both practices knew and weren't bothered. I could relay any required history myself, but if it was an ongoing problem I would be using the same practice for it until it was resolved anyway.

I use two vets.

One local practice for routine work and emergencies, and then another for anything slightly more technical; such as diagnostic work / imaging and so on, so forth.

I’ve not come across any issues re sharing notes, and they’re both aware I use another practice for different services.

I'm with 2. One has a hospital the other doesn't. If I think it needs a hospital I go straight there instead of waiting for a referral. It wouldn't occur to me to use that to lie to a buyer, but it does to some people.

As of 1st September 2023 histories need to be shared between any vets treating a horse. In truth this was always the requirement, but in practice never really happened. It has been massively tightened up on so you may find that vets are much more keen to know about any other vets you may use so that they can do their bit to keep on the correct side of the legislation.

I did this for the reason one was closed for emergency, the other was my long term vet who if in an emergency couldn't get there in time i'd call the other but it depends what the problem was. I trusted my long term vet and he knew my horse which i preferred. When he retired I used the yard vets who worked out to be brilliant as well.

Thanks. This is what I'm hoping to do. 'Old' vet is very pragmatic and knows what my pony has been through and what I wouldn't consider letting him go through in the future.

I'm registered with one that is very local and I trust to stitch up in an emergency and vaccinate..... the other is some distance away but a specialist equine practice with a very good reputation
