My mare had been spotted mounting another mare in the field a few weeks ago and had be occasionally grumpy when schooling so I mentioned it to my vet when he came to do jabs. He suspected ovarian cysts/tumours so we tested for those. The results came back negative.

I'm speaking to my vet tomorrow but he left a voicemail for me this afternoon suggesting that we try regumate or a Depo injection. I've never heard of horses having the hormone injection so was wondering what your experiences were of both. Interested in the cost too. I'm reluctant to spend a fortune given that she is 99% perfect to handle and ride. Thoughts and opinions please so I can feel more informed when I talk to my vet tomorrow!

I will add that I trust my vet completely and will go with what he suggests but wanted your thoughts too!

My mare was on regumate, that was expensive but she was a nightmare to handle and you could not go near her back end when she was in season. She was in so much pain with them that she used to throw herself on the floor.

She has been off it two years now and it helped to reset them into something calmer.

To be honest if she is fine to handle and ride I wouldn't do anything like what your vet is suggesting

My sisters mare is on regumate when in work due, she is a different horse on it and doesn't tell you to F off when you put your leg on. Interestingly enough (mentioned this on another thread), my vet said a lot of mares first and last cycle in the season is often their worse whilst their hormones are adapting. My vet said if my mare becomes as hormonal and mareish as she did in the autumn, to possibly put her onto regumate for about 10 days at the beginning of this season to help put her into a cycle quicker without the hormones flailing up and taking over making her into a fire breathing monster.

That's interesting - she has been lovely all winter, after having a real blip in October, but became quite touchy in February...

Haven't read other replies but my vet said you have to be careful about depo provera as it isn't licensed for the use for horses.

I have two mares on regumate it's fab. I buy a 1 litre of the pig version called regumate porcine works the same two reasons one it's cheaper and secondly because you can buy a drenching gun to fit to the top of the one litre porcine bottle and it delivers a 6ml dose this is easier to dispense than the equine version that comes with a syringe it cost about £150 and lasts for five months. I tried an implant last year. Think that's what your talking about as an alternative they inject it into there neck... Blooming nightmare never again. Firstly the cost I think in all coast £280 lasts aprox three to six months ie they can't give you an exact time. So wasn't sure when not working so not happy as when stopped horses threw a mighty strop and threw someone off. It's supposed to dissolve mine didn't so I insisted the vet took it out as it left a hard lump I could feel it under her skin. So I'd avoid if I was you if it's the same thing. I was new last year I was the first one our vet had done
