I understand it can have that effect, but should be discussed with your vet as it is not licenced for this - and of course is banned in affiliated competition for this purpose
i dont compete him at affiliated level anyway so thats not a problem. I am going to contact my vet to discuss using it on geldings tomorrow (and find out if it can even be perscribed to geldings).
was just wondering if anyone had used it on males and whether or not it works? was hoping for opinions on how affective it is (or not!?!)
anything else anyone could recomend for calming stallion behaviour would also be a huge help??
yes hes been tested. does actually mount mares or anythig like that. its more other geldings he has a problem with when they come near 'his' mares! he heards other horses with his head down to floor and ears flat back, he goes round field smelling other horses poo then squeals and poos on top of it, if other geldings come near him (whether in same field or up to fence of his field) he squeals and lashes out with his front legs. he has never caused injury to other horses but he has hurt his self a number of times when lashing out at fence and geting his leg caught!
He doesn't sound that unusual and this behaviour is exactly why some yards choose to completely separate mares from geldings. He is doing what he is conditioned and programmed to do - so you either live with that behaviour or take him away from the mares so he can settle down a bit.
he used to be kept separate from mares and was a bit better. unfortunately at this yard there arent the facilities for him to graze alone (which would b perfect as he still acts this way to geldings even when mares are not around!)
due to him constantly injuring himself i want to try anything i can to try and calm his behaviour even if its only slightly, any change will b better than how he is at the moment.
i am willing to give anything a go as otherwise he will have to be stabled full time
Yes, I have used Regumate on a gelding, but his behaviour was much more severe than this. I would discuss it with your vet first, as it's not a substance that you want to handle continually.
Yes the vet did prescribe it. It did give some good results, but did not clear all the problems. Our gelding was not a rig, but we believe, he had been used at stud and gelded late. His behaviour was learnt and he became very aggressive and nasty to handle.
Regumate was fed every day through the breeding season, and although it did calm him somewhat, was not always successful. He then had a diagnosis of kissing spines, was completely crazy and in the end we had to have him PTS.
Your gelding sounds like normal dominant behaviour. If he is only doing this to other geldings then I would suggest grazing him separately, or letting them sort out their own pecking order.
If this can't be done, then speak to your vet, they will give you the information, and advise on the best course of treatment.
I don't want to sound harsh but, believe me ours had actually put someone in hospital with serious injuries, and was a very dangerous horse when the mares were in season. Yours doesn't sound so severe, so a word with the vet would be the best course of action.
Regumate is horrible stuff to handle and you have to be very careful with it, so if you can do without it would be great.
