Sorry I know this is probably in the wrong place but I like it best in here!

Having had my mare for 4 years now, it has become clear that she when she is in season she becomes lazy and just doesn't want to do things which has meant her showjumping can be quite inconsistent. I have also noticed that we have much more energy and success during the winter months. So after chatting with my vet, this year we decided to try her on regumate.

I started her on it on Friday and so far riding wise i think she is already seeming better - more energy and moving forward better. However, she has started to be really agressive with my other horse. Usually they get on really well and are besotted with one another, even though my regumate mare is definitely the boss. On Sunday I noticed her really bossing my other mare about and yesterday when they were being brought in she kicked her (luckily my other mare is fine). I am obviously quite worried about this and wondering whether to take her off it. The vet has said she has never had this type of thing reported but it is possible that it will change behaviour as we are interfering with the hormones. She said it may settle in the next few days.

I'd be interested to hear other people's experiences when they have put their mares on regumate. Did you see a difference in behaviour like this? Did it settle etc?

I am going SJ on Saturday so bit worried she might start kicking other horses in collecting ring.....but if i take her off the regumate she will probably be in season so not worth going! I want to make sure i give the regumate a good try but not at the expense of my horse / someone else's horse!

Any thoughts gratefully received.

My mare has been on Regumate since the beginning of the year. I have struggled a few years with her and in Jan we had her scanned to see the problems. Vet ok'd a prescription for Regumate. (wont go into medical stuff) In the first two weeks she was seen mounting my other mare twice! These two are usually best buddies - vet just laughed it off. I have no other bad behaviour - in fact she is a pleasure to be around - she is quieter in her dressage work (she is very sensitive but anything that involved a lot of leg she was tense, tail swishing and bum high) and now she just gets on with the job. She is still a grump around meal times but I think that is just her - nothing hormonal. She seems more happy and chilled in herself too.

Yes it was only those two times (that were seen anyway) and usually she doesnt even play never mind mount a horse bigger than herself. Luckily other mare just walked off and ignored her.

At the moment is she is on it every day - just ordered another bottle and then will probably see what happens. I cant remember if vet said she would need rescanning or that this is it now. On last visit (for another horse) I said mare seemed happy and they signed me another prescription - the one litre bottle has lasted nearly 3 months and I am not finished yet so willing to give another bottle a try. I think they said would probably stop it around October but will check with them. I have spent a fortune on every 'mare' thing and 'calmer' thing going so for me the price of regumate is realistic.

Forgot to say my vet said some of the symtoms could take weeks / a couple of months to settle down and see any change in her behaviour.

Hi i tried my mare on regumate, and it made her worse. She was even more flirty, and silly.
I took her off it as couldnt cope with her behavior.

However, if your mares better work wise id be inclined to keep her on it and see if the agression settles. Id take her the show and just put a red ribbon in her tail, that way people will steer clear of you abit more. But jumping her might help you decide if the regumate has changed her performance?

If your going southview, i will prob see you there.

MardyMare - thanks thats helpful. Interesting to know that your vet thought it would take a while for things to settle down.

Showjump - good idea re red ribbon - will have to see if i've got one somewhere! You're right - i do need to jump her to see if there is any difference. I am going to South View for the Disco and hopefully Newcomers. Hopefully see you there! Look out for a red ribbon!

My ginger mare will have a red ribbon also, hopefully will be jumping disco and may attempt her first newcomers! see you sat.

Mine has been on it a few weeks now and I had the same thing initially. She got really grumpy with her best mate for a start but that has now resolved and they are back to being buddies. It's definitely taken away the clingyness she had to her pals before which is good as that was causing a lot of issues with napping.
