Hello ?

I have recently brought a TB ex racer (retired 2017) mare, 12 years old, 2 weeks ago.

She seem pretty bombproof and all was going quite well until a few days in. She was shod and bathed with me, I could handle her fine, pick her feet etc all the normal bits and bobs, then all unravelled.

I posted another thread with some pictures of her (if you’d like to have a read) I asked about her feed as I thought what she came to me with was way to much in terms of energy and heating for her. I got some amazing feedback and have now changed her diet over so fingers crossed ? I ran this change past a vet first and they also agreed to make the change straight away as the other stuff was bad for her. I don’t like to make to many changes to quickly but her food had to be changed as the vet said if it’s not currently making her poorly it definitely will do if I don’t.

Also, what didn’t help was she came to me in season ? so I’ve watched her go down a slippy slope in terms of her behaviour since having her. I’m almost certain we have a combination of things going on here, mainly her season and then move and the food not helping the situation!

She’s running the fence line continuously, bolting around her field, beating up and using my yearling as a punching bag, not eating her grass and trying to get to the gelding in the neighbouring field ??‍♀️ She now won’t tie up (which she did previously beautifully) and won’t keep remotely still for me to do anything with her. I know mares go through this but to the point of being dangerous is not ok and it would be irresponsible of me to not try and help the situation

I have been recommended to get her on REGUMATE immediately and I’m now on day 2 of that. I wanted to know if anyone had any experience of regumate and did it help while they were actually in season and acting this way?? It would be so nice to have the mare back I met and more importantly for her own sake! It must be borderline tortuous for her ?

Ive asked the previous owners (who owned her from September last year) if she’s ever been like that with them and they said no and they have never known her to act this way at all and are shocked ??‍♀️

They did say numerous times before I brought her that what’s she is like with them they couldn’t promise me that she would be like with me as it’s a different home, so I’ve been really hard on myself. I was adamant I must have done something wrong and if I had I would hold my hands up but I genuinely haven’t. I haven’t even rode her properly yet since being here just the day to day essential care as to let her settle in.

she has let me sit on her bare back about day 4 she was with me I think ? and she was a dream! Just gently walking around together 10 mins which was really lovely. The previous owner said she’s never allowed anyone on her bareback before so she obviously has trust with you already which was nice to hear. Oh, she also had a saddle fitting and was on best behaviour that was day 3 and shod day 2 (because they were really bad I couldn’t leave them) apart from that she was left after then ??‍♀️

Anyones experiences regarding this apparent miracle medication it would be really great to hear from you. I’m praying it works for her ?

Thank you for reading ?

PS. I forgot to add, I’m not very experienced like some are on here, I’m just a pleasure rider so I’m learning as I go and trying to do my very best by them.

I know a friend that used it and worked for her. The Reason I wont have a mare there.
separate them in the field, run a fenceline up the middle ?

Yes I’ve ran a line straight down the centre to give them some distance. It looks like I was hit with everything at once ??‍♀️? well at least I’ve seen her at her very worst I guess ?

Its good to hear it worked for your friend, fingers crossed for mine ?

thank you again! ? x

Just give her time, it will get better ♥️
I always think about it like this….
Your wee mare plucked from her home to something that she doesnt know at all, trying to settle in and all these hormones hit you!

Absolutely, I know what I’m like on my monthly’s ? so we understand each other ? I went up an hour ago and she is far more settled so hopefully this is the start of the regumate working ? xx

It worked very well for my mare and definitely saw a difference in her after just a few days. Hope it helps your mare.
I’m sure you’ve been warned but do be really careful handling it - trust me you don’t want to get it on your skin!!

a lot of people seem to have very positive experiences with it so I’m hoping my mare responds well to. I’m about to give day 3 today, so hopefully tomorrow I will really start to see some difference if it is going to work. The vet said 3 days of administrations should knock 95% of mares out of heat ?

I ride a mare for someone else and she is very marey!
She comes across as pretty bad tempered, has to be tied up to tack up/groom etc as her teeth and legs are everywhere, but she’s manageable.
She’s been on Regumate for a couple of years I’m told that before starting her in it she was a complete nightmare and could be pretty awful to handle and ride. They swear it’s like a Miracle medicine for her…. I’m kind of glad I never met her pre-regumate ?

Just wanted to add, in case you hadn't heard of it - there's a herb you can get in powder or seed form called Agnus Castus/Chaste berry, which is one of the main ingredients in many mare supplements - some find it very effective on its own, and it's a fraction of the price of Regumate, so may be worth a try if you find Regumate to be effective

Agnus Castus has really chilled my mare out - she wasn't aggressive before, just totally preoccupied with other horses when in season, and as a result much more difficult to handle

It worked at first for my daughter’s mare but after a few weeks she started cycling despite being on regumate so we took her off it. The first season after she moved yards was the worst, but she’s had a similar behaviour pattern this year - coming into season very strongly in spring, being very difficult for a few months then gradually chilling out over summer, being lovely over autumn and winter and then bam, first season in spring it starts again. It does seem to be a miracle cure for most mares though but just be aware you might need to adjust the dose if it doesn’t work

The Regumate will not work straight away if she's currently in season- it's like the human pill, it's not going to prevent this current ovulation.
It sounds like there are other things amiss in her management that you need to change to help her out

I agree, there seems to be something a miss so I’m trying all I can. I think a scan of the ovaries, X-ray for KS and also a gastroscope just to cover all basis. Would be doing an injustice if I’m missing signs that she maybe in pain etc.

She’s also attacking my yearling gelding quite badly. Walked her back up into her field after her evening feed and when I took her head collar off she instantly pinned her ears span on the spot and lunged at him (two front hooves off the floor) and gave him a very nasty bite for no reason for it at all ??‍♀️

she respects me when I am able to protect him from her (I don’t mess when it comes to my personal space) and she’s never gone to hurt me. Although she did try to slightly kick a trainer I had out the other day to look at her while she popped a fly rug on her ??‍♀️ She has bonded to me though and I know tbs can be very one person once they form that bond.

Oh gosh i wouldn’t want to ever risk running out with a horse like that ? Regumate has calmed her down slightly but that might be because she will be coming out this cycle so fingers crossed for the next ones ?

Thank you, I will definitely have a look into that because it would be nice not to have her on a medication for the next 10 or so years!
