I posted recently and had some helpful posts but I am still looking to hear from anyone who has used regunate on a mare that bucks when in season.
I am hoping for some success stories.
My mare becomes very sensitive and can buck quite badly. she doesn't seem to do it when not in season so I am wondering if putting her on Regumate might stop the bucking.
I am quite a desperate stage as she has bucked me off once too often now and I want to give her a last chance before I decide to 'retire' her.

LAST WEEK SHE BUCKED ME OFF OVER HER HEAD ON THE ROAD. I LANDED ON MY FACE ouch! AND HAVE FRACTURED A BONE IN MY NECK. I WAS VERY LUCKY IT WASN'T WORSE. OOPS cAPS! SORRY!

so any experiences of whether using regumate effected mares that buck will be hugely appreciated.

I had a pony that used to be a nightmare when in season. As well as being basically unridable as aids became nonexistant and her taking the absolute p*** when in season, she used to buck, not big buck or enough to unseat me but I decided to start simple when I was looking for a remedy. Lucky for me, my first option worked.
I gave my little lady Wendal's Herbs 'Moody Mare'. I just gave it to her as instructed on the tub, a little bit (can't remember exact measurements) everyday with her feed.

She went from being uncatchable/impossible to groom and tack up/ difficult to ride and school, impossible to manage in other horses company etc to be totally manageable to the point where I could compete her without causing a major scene... she became like her usual non-inseason self, all the time.

It was amazing the difference a few dried herbs made, I know herbal type things aren't everybody's thing and usually wouldn't be be my first port of call but it did the job!

Thanks I*HM, I did try Oestress but there was no noticeable difference except her poos became virtually liquid which was most unpleasant!
So no buckers out there then :-(

Hi Op, my mare this time last yr got to be a handful.
Anything would set her off at a split second, she would go from schooling lovely to seeing another horse on road or coming in from field and she would lose the plot... Tanking off, bucking etc. Regumate worked wonders.

I used Regumate, and for a while it did seem to help. The trouble is with the horse one it is so expensive you have to have them on and off it, and for a competition if you get the timing wrong it actually made my mare worse (I think she was almost in season and it held her in a PMT pattern!!!).

I know of people who use the pig version, and was assured it was the same, but under FEI rules (at that time I was competing CCI eventing) the pig version was banned. The people who use the pig version I think use it all summer. I would ask a vet for advice.

I also used a mare marble, it did make a difference, but you could still tell she was a mare, it just evened her out a bit.

My mare was very stressy, hormonal. Moody etc and i tried relaxin - amazing difference !!! And as it is in sachets it stays fresh !x cannot recommend the stuff highly enough x

My mare lives on regumate all year round, not to stop her seasons but to stop the behaviour associated, she doesnt become nasty/moody but instead she becomes very anxious, has terrible separation anxiety, screams her head off if taken away from anyone/thing and was unrideable because she would get in such a state about someone/something 5 miles away on the horizon, screaming and rearing and plunging if she was asked to move away from the fence! On regumate she is a legend, i can tell if she hasn't had quite enough now and can see her getting a bit angsty!! it costs a fortune, but without it i think at least one of us wouldnt be here now!

Yes regumate is the final product to use, after you have confirmed saddle fitting, ulcers, stroppy mare by donson and horrell is quite good, cheaper than regumate, does her her fit nicely not too thin, not too tight, not pulling the saddle down on to her back when girthed up, or put in foal this usually sorts out hormonal problems, but again we then have the case of indiscrimate breeding. Get vet to check well he has to prescribe the regumate anyway.

Regumate does do the trick in most circumstances but equally I've found having a marble put in just as good (and a damn sight cheaper) could be worth talking to your vet about that.

A friend tried Regumate with her young mare (4 year old) and sorry, but to be honest, it made no difference at all. She was still bucking, rearing, spinning...... She's given her a year off and is just about to bring her into work again so can't yet say whether the year off has helped.

The only problem is regumate is a farce to feed all summer. My mare was on it last year and I had to be really careful handling it because it said women of a child bearing age couldn't let it touch their skin! So I was always worried about washing out her bucket etc. Probs me being really over-reactive but I'd maybe consider other options and use this as a last resort

Hi Perce, you have my sympathy. We are currently going through the same with our mare who can change in a matter of seconds from a usually very nice mannered horse to one that can snort like a rhino at other horses, rear, buck, prance with her tail in the air and just be a total head case! It came to a head the other day when she actually became very dangerous while out hacking. If we go to a show and she sees a horsey friend stood at the side of the ring she will set off and nothing will stop her until she gets to it. We are having her checked out by our vet to see if she has any ovarian cysts. Apparently these can cause all sorts of bad behaviour. I'd be interested to know if Regumate helps yours.

Exactly this, I ould have typed this myself

Thank you for responses peops.
I spoke to the vet practise today about possibilities.
I don't think it is a saddle issue (I have it checked regularly)
She has always bucked. when I backed her I remember joking to my helper "better make sure she never realizes she can get me off or I am in trouble!"
As a young horse she bucked daily in all sorts of situations and I spent much of my hacks leading her about before getting back on board again.
But she has improved from year to year and it now seems to be when she is hormonal that she is more likely to buck. and unfortunately she often does several in very quick succession.
But she can go for months on end without bucking once summer arrives. She does not scream, skirt or squeal or become very girly.she just gerts super sensitive to the leg abnd will kick out if you do up rugs or anything else near her back end. she wears a red ribbon when out and people know if she may be hormonal by her ribbon - nice Ellie has a red ribbon plaited into her tail beautifully. Horrid Ellie has a tuft of tail stuck up with a ribbon attached that has clearly been done in a hurry from a distance :-)
At this time am considering scan to check ovaries and discussion about use of regumate. forgot to discuss marbles Doh! today. awaiting quote to give me some idea of possible costs involved.
