I have a mare who can't live without being on this regumate, if she misses a dose then she is leaning and kicking the walls, she rubs her hips until she draws blood and then goes into a spasm across her back, squeals, kicks and then relaxes this carries on all the time unless she has food or is turned out. She is not at all mareish to ride or handle, she has been scanned and all her ovaries etc are normal, she is 9years old and had a foal at 3. She has her back checked reguarly and all is fine there. She has to be on it all winter, it never changes and she look so distressed by it all.Has anyone experienced the same?

Can't offer any advice but welcome to the forum

You need to get her checked out by a good repro vet if she hasn't already been so, and pronto.

They only come into season over the summer and to still be like that in winter is not normal in the slightest and suggests a problem.

She sounds like she's painful.

It might be worth condering having her ovahystorectomied (spayed). It's not done commonly in horses asit's exensive and risky but it is possible. I knew one mare who have an OH due to severe behavioural issues and it cured her totally.

My mare used to come into season in the winter, it's nothing to worry about the winter's are much milder now. She was fully checked by the vets and scanned regulary. Up until recently she was on Regumate. However, I have just had the marble inserted and she has been fab. Well worth asking you vet.

If she is doing this all the time then I would check out her kidneys too, they are located very close to the ovaries and if she is also in pain in winter it could be that.

It could be 6 of 1 and half a dozen of the other, the combined effect being the distress.

Hey Madam Max, Kizzy has had the marble too, I can honestly say it is like riding a different pony, I can't believe what a difference its made!!

Thanks for that, I have been trying to find out about the marble, is there any side effect or downside and did you find it an expensive route? Is there a medical term for it?

She has been thoroughly checked out blood tests etc and all was fine, the vet felt that if the Regumate works for her then don't worry about it, which is fine until someone forgets to put it in her feed or she may not get the correct dosage.

No side effects. Just be certain you don't want to breed from her. Although it can be taken out as Racehorse mares have them and are removed but it can be tricky. They are actual marbles, no medical term. Mine came from Hamleys.

Just to add it is not always a success.

Lots of horses come into season in the winter months, even those who live in the Frozen North. Your mare is doing exactly what mine used to do before she was put on drugs for another condition, which happily also caused her to stop coming into season! I used to call it Oh Dear Week, as she would wait for me to arrive and then go into her routine and the more I said Oh Dear, the more she did it. Sometimes I would even find her sitting on her bottom like a dog. I think vets don't take this ovarian pain seriously enough. Unfortunately, it is like PMT. Some of us get it worse than others and if you haven't had it , you can't imagine what it is like. Incidentally, did you know that vets use regumate as a kickstart to make mares cycle more evenly. Once you stop using it, they have a far worse season than normal as a reaction. I'd seriously consider homeopathy for your mare.
