We bought 6 yr old mare last winter, sweetest pony ever, had been backed last year af+er breeding a couple of foals, she recently had her 1st season with us and became unrideable. She would constantly buck, teeth, tack and back all checked and fine. Spoke with vet who has suggested regumate, but i am confused because having read up on it it looks like it can only be given for 15 days then you have to have a break which means a season, does anyone know if it can be used to prevent seasons for a few consecutive months? thanks

Yes she can be on it constantly for behavioural problems. Have you had her ovaries scanned? It may be worth it. If she is fine on regumate ( it is very expensive) then it might be worth getting a sterile marble inserted into her uterus ( she needs to be in season for this to happen) this will make her body think she is in foal which will stop her cycling, however if you plan to breed from her in the future then it will need removing.

My jumping pony suffered from severe colic every time she was in season, we put her on regumate and it stopped the colicing, unfortunatly she then needed colic surgery for a twisted gut so while she was on the table my vet removed her ovaries. She recovered and continued jumping for another 6 months only to colic again, she had adhesions on her gut from the previous surgery and I had to have her put to sleep to relieve her suffering.

I have assisted in ops to remove mares ovaries under standing sedation via laparoscopy and the mares have recovered fine.

Hope this helps.
