Does anyone know the current cost for Regumate, for what amount and how long it lasts? I cant remember, old age I guess! Will be bringing my mare back into work soon and she performs better with it.

And also has anyone used and had success with the pig version? A friend highly recommended it and said that it was a lot cheaper.

Ta.

The porcine and equine are similar prices nowadays around £120 for a litre 12 mls a day equine 10 mls porcine. Many vets won't give u porcine for a horse. Have u tried moody mare or oestress or slut mix? I do not think long term use of regulate is advisable it becomes less and less affective and is not recommended. If u want to breed from the mare eventually.

The reason many vets wont prescribe porcine is because its cheaper! Its exactly the same product !It is at the moment about 10% cheaper

I'm not sure what regumate is classed as, but a vet is not allowed to prescribe a drug licensed for a different species if there is an alternative licensed for the actual species.

Porcine is also a stronger % so that you feed half the amount hence why it works out cheaper, when I bred my mare I had my vet give me a prescription for "regumate" and was able to buy the porcine one online with it

your not correct there a vet can prescribe whatever they think is suitable to treat the animal at the time. on strength equine 2.2mg/ml porcine 2.5mg/ml so not twice the strength hence the equine dose being 12ml and porcine 10ml so £1.50 equine and £1.10 porcine approx a day.

I have tried various supplements and some have helped but none of them would not be strong enough for competition. She has not been on Regumate for three years and then was for only 9 months so not long term use.

I will call my vet next week and chat through the porcine versus equine version. The supplement she is on costs about £30 and lasts 2 months so it will cost considerably more but might be worth it.

Thanks for the responses. Helped with my decision.

Petmeds do a good deal u can get it for about 100 for 1litre lasts 3 months, my mares on it every summer and I couldn't live without it, I tried pig stuff which vet proscribed me as he was conscious this was going to be a huge expense for me to maintain but unfortuneatly it didn't work as well for my mare and the vet had no explanation as to why it wouldn't ;( they constantly urge me to remove her ovaries but I'd rather not!
