Does anyone know of or had personal experience with alternate therapies or rehabilitation techniques that they were highly recommend? Whether it be the treatment of a specific injury or the on going treatment and maintenance of a working horse.

Bowen technique and Osteopathy - thought not at the same time.
Would recommend both of these. Really helpful if you can treat the rider at the same time as the horse. Helpfully, practitioners have to qualify on humans before they can work on horses

Bowen without a doubt - I have just bought three sessions in advance so if pony needs them (she is always sick!) I don't have to worry about finding the money - I use a lady called hazel (www.hoofandpawholistics.co.uk).

I also rate global herbs products highly and find they have a great impact too

When my (now deceased) gelding fractured his leg about four years ago, my vet told me that he would never ever be sound - possibly a light hack, but that would be all. Added to which he got osteomyelitis which went right the way through the bone. I did the required box rest with him and then I took him to a rehab yard where they have a swimming pool and a huge 8 horse walker. He spent the next three/four months with half an hour on the walker morning and afternoon and swam two or three times a week. By the time I got back on him he was sound and never went lame as a result of it again. He went back to doing dressage better than before. My mare is currently lame with a suspensory ligament injury. I will be trying the same with her when she comes back into work (or I should say "if" she comes back to work). I really rate swimming for horses. My vet was always astounded that my boy had come sound.

BB - a bit more information will get you more replies. The what, why, how, horse details etc etc etc x

It was a general question rather than a specific one. I am writing an assignment on therapies for university and was just looking for ones which I may not have come across before. My horse is perfectly sound, I just wanted to know if any owners had first hand experience in a not so mainstream technique. Thanks for your input though!

I am sorry to hear about your gelding and hope that your mare is on the mend soon! I have found lots of info about swimming and it seems to be highly rated. Do you know if you need to have any qualifications/training in order to carry out the session or can anybody use it if they have the equipment? You say he had a session a few times a week...how long did each of these last and what would you class the intensity of each session to be equivalent to? Did you notice any difference in the build up of muscle whilst he was undergoing therapy? Do you have any thoughts on the hydrotherapy treadmill?
