Rehoming a companion horse

And then there are the "its not fair to PTS" brigade.....who think someone is going to want their pain wracked 17hh eating machine as a field ornament.
If YOU dont want a field ornament of that size and cost, why on earth would anyone else?

Well, people like my mum who are a sucker for a sob story! :D

But why?
If owners did the RIGHT thing and stop palming off unridable/elderly/sick horses instead of doing the decent thing by them, there would be no need for a brand!
The amount of big horses that are on Preloved right now that are any one of the above.....if you cant bring yourself to do the right thing for any horse you might get, dont get the damn horse!

Have to say I agree with this. There seems to be so many 'companion horses' out there at the moment and it isn't right. It seems all too easy to keep them whilst they have a use but as soon as that use goes they want to palm the horse off elsewhere.

You see a lot of stickers that say 'a dog is for life' maybe one should be designed for the horse.:)

How many charities want a loaded gun for a gift? Horses in charities could do with being the ones who actually HAVE a chance of getting rehomed, not something that will only ever cost the charity money - not much of a gift in my eyes.

To be sure of his and everyone elses future I'd only consider BB or PTS.

People in this country are so terrified of putting an animal down, there is nothing more morally and ethically sound than putting down a dangerous animal. No-one in their right mind could judge you for that (unless of course you COULD keep it yourself and just don't want to... ;) but how few are in that position?)

people are often too quick to classify a horse as unrideable imo. i have a 13.3 sold as dangerous/unrideable because hes strong and no 7 year old could have ridden him at the time- 5 years later and theres a fight going on between which pony club kids can borrow him for the teams. a true bolter is rare- most are just too strong for the person riding them, but when they do exist theres often a reason (e.g. brain tumour)

The question is a very subjective and difficult question isn't it.

If the OP is an experienced horseman, understands what a true panic driven bolting horse actually is and has looked at the horse in question from every possible view, including veterinary issues, and can conclude that the horse is dangerous. In my view there is no need to post the question at all, there is nothing to discuss and the horse must be destroyed.

With a different view the horse may just be in the wrong home and in dire need of correct handling, medical attention or both.

A friend of mine is an amateur whip and the vast majority of her horses over a period of 30 plus years have been other people's so called nutcases. She is a highly experienced horse woman whose view on most naughty or difficult horses is to ensure they are comfortable and then give them plenty to do.

Companion horses certainly have a place, I needed one very urgently when my big horse hurt himself and needed something to share his barn with him for many months. I chose the smallest pony I could find to keep costs to a bare minimum and I couldn't see many people wanting big horses as companions.

Interested to hear more about the horse - what it does, etc.

My boy came out of racing three years ago:
Owner 1 - sold due to being dangerous ...
Owner 2 - sold due to being dangerous and was advised to destroy the animal ASAP
Owner 3 (me) in process of being reschooled and going really well

Im not saying this is the case with this animal but it's just one small case where horsey was fine (albeit a few issues) but wasnt in the right hands. :o

Agree with the banding though :D

Why on earth would you 'gift' to a charity? They have hundreds of unwanted animals already - which have been rescued......... (Not that they would take it anyway).

No one is saying that there aren't 100% brilliant homes out there for a companion. But you have to be sooo careful, and some of these horses do end up in pretty dire situations.

I got my shire as he was "Gifted" to the WHW he was an ex Greater Manchester Police Horse this is what they did a good few years ago and also if people die they put in their wills that the horses be gifted to a charity such as WHW. I rescue every single time and this is how I got my pony cause he was gifted to the WHW if not he'd be dead. As for rescuing I do my fair share ive got 8 rescue cats, 4 rabbits, 2 guinea pigs 2 horses and am looking into rescuing another because people are to quick to PTS simple without people like me these animals would be dead

Police horses are not actually gifted, they come with an annuity.

And people 'gifting' horses to the WHW is something that is done, yes, but again would normally come with an annuity.

These places are struggling to make ends meet - and I can assure you that if either you, I or the OP phoned up and said we were 'gifting' them our horse - they would tell us to take a running jump (unless we were giving them the several thousands of pounds in livery for the horse.....)

Agree with this completely, just PTS one of my rescue ponies, 37 years old, with me for 3 years, and on day before collected Casey age not really known, to keep other rescue company. All came from same sancturary in this case Crosskennan, whose founder Lynn is literally begging people for fields to rent, as she has so many deserving cases ie Mallusk. and Ballymena. Should have said go to their Facebook page if you can help with grass!
