Hi just wondering if anybody has/has had an ex racehorse from any of the well known rehabilitation centres (moorcroft/HEROES etc)?
I am just wondering about the process and if you think it was worth it?

I am considering doing it but from reading I am not exactly sure how it all works and I am in the midlands but they all seem to be far away which will obviously end up costly by the time i have visited a couple of times. If anyone knows of any places near the midlands that have a place similar that would be great!!

The Thoroughbred Rehabilitation Centre in Lancashire would not be that far from you, straight up the M6. It was started up by a friend of mine Carrie Humble. It is excellent and the horses are all very well prepared for their next stage of life. But to be honest if you think the travelling is too costly, do you think that you can afford to keep a TB?

I would try the Ex racehorse owners forum, loads of people on there with lots of different experiences, should be able to get some good advice. I have an ex racer, I thought about one of the rehoming centres but it did work out quite expensive, I was lucky and found one for sale locally to me who had been reschooled and was 12 months off the track, he cost me £900 and is a lovely little riding club type.

I bought one quite cheaply from HEROS and she was lovely but they loan them too. They really do put in a lot of work and give you backup help too. Plus, if you dont get on with the horse or it needs special vet treatment etc. they will usually take the horse back. Yes the ExRacers forum are great and horses come up for sale/loan (but many are straight off the track) so unless you are an experienced TB person i would stick to the rehabilitation centres.
Best of luck.x

Thanks for your replies. Pastie2 I can afford to look after one I can also afford the travelling but from looking they seem to want 3-4visits and if that is to the locations or similar it is going to cost in the region of 1000pounds by the time we have travelled down and stayed over (we wouldnt stay in lancashire tho) in a matter of a few weeks, that is money i could just spend on the horse itself.
I will definately be sticking to a rehabilitated one or atleast one that has had some schooling since racing, i am used to TB's I ride one at the moment but I would not feel confident to have one and reschool myself!! I know my limits haha

Have a look at Darley rehoming - they are quite a way away from you, but I've heard good things from them.......also agree with Pastie2 - TRC in Lancs is worth a try. Good luck
