Could any of you stressage experts please describe the definitive rein back. We keep getting "tentative" when I feel he is going back willingly, straight and in good steps. What are we doing wrong?

Its hard to say without a video of what is going on.

But rein back needs to be ground covering with clear steps back, nice and straight and soft into the contact (not resisting etc).

Also, worth saying that rein back is two time, and the legs move in diagonal pairs. It is likely that your horse (not yours Tempi LOL, the OP's) is losing the clear two beat rhythm.

*waves* - i didnt realise it was you!!! Hope you are well
