I used to have a wonderful pair of suede covered reins and I loved them. I had them for years and years and were repaired more than once but they are so cracked now they are just not safe. I currently have a horrible pair of cheap rubber grip ones that are too short so I must buy a new pair.

Which type of reins do you prefer, rubber grip, plaited, continental etc and why?

oh god this reminds me, i went horse shopping on Sunday and saw some amazing ones, they were about £100 though

personally I like rubber reins but only when they are old and not as bulky

I love my Jeffries and Stubben rubber grip reins for everyday riding, hunting, hunter trialling etc. When I'm using a double bridle or pelham with two reins, I use rubber grip reins for the snaffle rein and plain leather reins for the curb rein

I ride in continental ones at the mo and I think they're great for everyday riding, those and plain reins are my preference. Can't stand rubber reins, I always found them too bulky, plain reins and continental reins seems just about right.

I love my rubber reins but they are really old and well worn. Bot some new ones on my new bridle and they are way too stiff at the moment

I've got some Eventa reins (rubber but smooth not bobbled) and I like them, they are nice to ride with. Continental arer ok too.

Jenbleep - I know the reins you mean - they are gorgeous to ride in - not sure what they are called though.

I love half nuback/ half leather reins for flatwork and use Jeffries bio grip for jumping/ fast work. Love the bio grips as they are grippy but not bulky and give a much better feel than ordinary rubber reins

I like the material reins with rubber intertwined for extra grip, but without the continental extra leather bits

Love them to bits but now a nightmare to get hold of. Used to be the fashionable thing about 5 years ago but because on the cheaper pairs the rubber wears away very quickly they have faded into oblivion. Get mine now from Kavalkade but they only do them in black so I have black reins and a brown bridle and saddle! oh well I don't care and I really can't stand riding in any other type of reins except plain leather but in the rain I find them too slippery.

I used to like dressage reins, but they went a bit manky and now I prefer rubber reins as long as they're not too hard. Rubber seems to go manky and gooey quite quickly, but it might just have been the rubbishy reins I bought. The suede ones sound amazing! I don't mind laced reins, but absolutely loathe continental (webbing) reins *shudder*

I always rode my previous horses in plain leather reins but when I bought my boy a few months ago he came without tack & I ended up borrowing my friends bridle for a couple of weeks. She had rubber reins & I loved them. When I ordered my bridle I chose rubber reins & now I wonder how I rode with plain leather ones.
My horse has been off work for a couple of weeks so I've been riding whatever I've been offered & really struggled jumping with continental reins the other day. It's amazing the difference a set of reins makes!

I hate rubber reins, they hurt my hands

and cant stand riding in gloves, Ridden with some lovely reins though which are leather on top, then have elastic like rubber on the inside! I also love the look of plaited and laced, but my god does it hurt if a horse suddenly yanks extremely hard!

OMG! HOW expensive are they?? They look wonderful though

Do they last a long time?

[/ QUOTE ]I've only had mine a few months, but others say they do. They are not that expensive. Any of the big name rubber reins cost more to buy separately (ie. not bought with the bridle)!

thats the best pic i can find of the ones I like! I like them with buckles (not bilets!) and no continental stops but as said nightmare to find except cheap ones that fall apart. I still have two pairs which have lasted me 6 years each with daily use and grip still fantastic just stitching needs redoing in places so they currently in box awaiting repair!

I prefer continentals, rubber always seems so bulky and if you use a martingale they can get rubbed out. I also like plain leather reins with stops (like continentals) they look smart and just give you a bit more grip. Haven't seen any of those for a while though.

I have reins with leather one side and rubber grip on the other (but the bobbly bits are small and not bulky at all).

Would like some either plain leather reins or plaited reins for showing this season (if I ever get round to it)...but will always have my half rubber ones for jumping/XC type things as they're grippy!
