Reins - which do you prefer?

On Bob I used the reins with rubber on the inside and leather on the outside, but with the others I use plain reins on the weymouth and plaited or laced reins on the bradoon. The rubber on the inside is useful if you are riding a horse which has a tendancy to do his own thing just before the gallop ...

I find the best ones are the rubber reins that have very small thin bobbles close together. I think they used to be popular in p2p and came in a horrible orange rubber

They are mega grippy!

I loved my Plaited reins. They came with Tyler and were rather expensive however so they have been stored away safely.

Now ride with Rubber reins. I dont really have a like or dislike for them to be honest.

I only like Stubben rubber reins, they really are a different class to normal rubber ones. I do ride in thin gloves though!

I have the eventa ones just like the ones stella has but mine cost £48 in the saddlers.

I'm sure the velvety ones are the jeffries T de T reins. I bought some a couple of years ago and love them but the left rein has come away on the underside. Do they still sell them? When I bought ine they were about £65

I have two sets. The rubber covered ones and the slim leather ones. I go through phases of preferring each, currently liking the plain ones better!! In harsher winters the rubber ones are a must, as I have to hack out in ski gloves!

I ride Brook in continental webbing reins and like Honeypots, I find them useful for stopping me getting wonky.

Rubber reins + Roeckel gloves = a new pair of gloves every month

I do like the look of plaited and laced reins. Maybe that will be my next investment

Mine are rubber inside and leather outer, quite narrow and work well.

Me too

Hate really thick reins, I use rubber for eventing as they give more grip, but the half rubber are good for every day. I have some plain leather ones which I use as a curb rein if necessary, but my mare gets so strong that I need a bit of grip to hang on to her so couldn't manage with plain leather for everyday, not even dressage schooling

I have a pair of Laced reins on Solo's bridle- I love them, they're really soft in my hands and i find them quite grippy.
On Sol's double bridle i have a plain rein for the Weymouth and a plain leather, continental rein on the Bradoon. (think they're called 'ladder' reins, came from Flyde)

On Red's bridle, I have a pair of those 'dressage' reins- the half rubber ones. They're alright, i suppose, but i prefer my laced ones!

For jumping and hunting though, i love my Stubben rubber reins- they are too bulky to use everyday.

I ride in gloves all the time.

Laced reins & good - quality neoprene gloves are the way to go. They look great, last well if you take care of them and really really make you pay attention to your hands. Sounds odd, but it's very useful if you've got a horse as sensitive in mine - ridden in a rubber loose ring snaffle at 10yrs old!

Plaited reins are the only type I use now. They are less rigid than laced reins (which are my second choice) and are so lovely and supple! Unfortunately you cant get them in many places, and they come at a hell of a price! But I would always have them; I get my local saddler to make them for me when I cant find what I want.

I have always used rubber until i bought my new Stubben bridle they have laced reins and i love them much less bulky
still have my Stubben rubber ones for hunting though

The Biogrip rubber reins are by far the best. Second best are the "normal" rubber reins with nylon through the core instead of leather, makes them floppier and easier to grip!!

Eventa reins, I throw a strop and have to go change if I start riding in anything else. Apart from my show bridle i have laced and a plain curb.
