Sorry strange question

. What type of reins do you prefer (Rubber, plain, plaited etc?) and do you ride in gloves at all?

Personally I have rubber reins and hate them but have not found any gloves I get on with. Any recommendations?. Am tempted by plaited leather reins so does anyone use them and what do you think of them?.

I always ride in gloves unless I forget them (like today, ouch).
I mainly have rubber reins, but I have to say my old share horse had laced reins and they were really nice, even when I forgot my gloves! I don't think I'd have enough grip to XC with them, but for dressage and SJ they were great. I think I'd like to try some half rubber reins in future, less bulk but enough grip hopefully. Otherwise I'd opt for laced for dressage/SJ and rubber for XC, personally.

I have event reins, like continental ones but in leather. I got them to try and break my habit of my reins getting longer and longer.

Yes I agree with Silmarillion wear Rubber reins for XC, especially if you have a strong horse.I use half rubber reins, (ive witnessed it and without them I think i would of probably died going around the XC course :L but I suggest wearing gloves with rubber grips on for extra friction. For SJ I would use plaited reins, they look nice, and have mild grip,

hope this helped

I like plain ones or laced for that extra grip. I have tiny hands so find rubber ones are a real bind to hold.

As for gloves, love the Mountain Horse crochet backed ones, they're great. SSG's are also good for XC etc.

I've got rubber reins but I've never tried anything else

I often wear gloves, especially if we are going to do fast work as my hands really hurt otherwise. I just use Tesco black rubber palmed ones, they are about a quid

I love my continental ones, found that i slip my reins without realising. this way i can only go about 4 inches.
One less thing to worry about during the dressage test!

I don't ride anymore

but used to use Continental reins . Laced are fine when they've worn in , but are painful to make !( I used to work for a Saddler . )

Word of warning on rubber reins - they are great , but please don't have them re-rubbered more than once . The stitching gets weak & they could break .

Always wore gloves after getting my fingers cut to shreds on those awful nylon plaited ones !

I have always ridden in rubber reins, but found them rather thick as I have small hands. I have just bought some continental reins with rubber running through them, they feel so nice and thin, maybe I can now ride without gloves occasionally , athough haven't tried as yet.

I have Sabre pony reins. The are rubber but are very thin and the "pimples" on the rubber are small. I hate big, thick rubber reins.
