Hi
I'm not very happy with my jumping position as I don't release over jumps. It is like a mental block and I need to start releasing so does anyone have any tips to help me release, like exercises that will help? Many thanks!

Hey

A tip given to me was to put a brightly coloured hairband at the correct point up the neck in the mane, so as you jump you need to aim to touch the band with your hands. After a while it'll become 2nd nature.

A good exercise to do is to jump without reins as this will strengthen your position. You will need a good instructor to help you do this properly as they will be able to adjust your position as you go to make sure you are correct and balanced. Also do lots of trot and canter work in jump position so that you are strengthening the muscles you need to hold yourself correctly. Once your position is stronger you should feel more confident in it to release. When you do release think of pushing your hand forwards towards the bit which isn't necessarily just putting them up the horse's neck- your hands should almost go around your horse's neck. Hope this helps!

It very much depends on your level of experience and the height you are jumping.

I agree with rosesandhorses - a good way to learn to instinctively release (v. useful if horse takes a long one!) is to jump without reins, preferably down a grid (no need for jumps to be big or anything), with an instructor/knowledgeable friend watching. To release properly you need to feel the movement of the jump.

Also, it's not rocket science! Don't overthink it :)

How i think of it is not putting your hands forwards but actually moving your hands downwards

As above just lots of practice and you'll soon get it :D

How about someone standing in front in halt and have them pull the reins as if you were giving to the horse?? it is one exercise I do when teaching.
