It looks like I'm going to seriously have to think about sending Dan to retirement livery. Prices have gone up at my yard and I can not justify spending a fairly significant sum for assisted DIY on a horse I don't have time to ride mainly due to work commitments.

I 'could' loan him but if ridden he needs specific management to keep him sound and I can see someone easily taking advantage of his showjumping past, he loves to jump still but to do so will quickly cause him to go lame therefore he is dressage/hack only and only with an experienced rider and what experienced riders realistically want a semi broken (although sound!) 14yo dressage pone even if he was previously at med/ad med level!?!

Therefore I am after ideas, my yard doesn't offer a proper 'retirement' livery as such and therefore I am realistically on the look out for somewhere that does.

Does anyone know of any yards prefrably in the Devon/Somerset area that offer retirement livery??

Any other ideas appreciated but come to conclusion I can't keep him as he is

It must be a dilemma for you, but are you sure that no one would want him as a happy hacker, or is he too sharp for that?
Before I got my boy I rode a lovely mare who couldn't jump or gallop because of tendon damage and she is still doing fine at 17!! I would be quite happy with a horse that doesnt jump or compete!

he needs a confident rider when hacking 99% of the time he is like a donkey but if he chooses to throw his dolly out the pram (at something scary) you need the confidence to tell him your boss. he is 17h2 as well. I know him inside out and know exactly how to get him to behave but if he span/bunny hopped (never reared properly is merely bunny hopping!) on someone not confident he could well scare someone. And I don't think there is many people like that who hack only although I dearly wish to be proved otherwise.

He can still compete dressage wise but I have not tested to what level. Took him out to a few local unaffil novices a while back to test he was sound from a judges perspective, he satisified that test and brought back a 1st and 3rd to boot bless him lol

Oh and he would never hunt (too much of a wuss trust me I tried

) so not suitable as a gentleman's hunter either LOL

You might be able to find someone. There are definitely people about that do only want to hack but obviously you would have to vet homes as thoroughly as possible.

If you do go down the retirement livery road I've got a feeling henryhorn has a retirement yard in devon, but not totally sure.

It would definitely be worth pming them.

There is a very good retirement livery yard near the Devon County Show ground. pm me for details
I know a lot of people who have used this experienced couple for retirement and or a rest period.

Henryhorn she is your area, and by reading her posts and blog although never talking to her on here and neither does she know me, I couldn't recommend someone more highly, her knowledge and love for her animals shines through.

She is one I truly admire. Try PMing her, she would be were I would love to send my oldies if I could never keep them.

HenryHorn was my first port of call

but sadly she isn't taking in newbie oldies especially oldies who are actually only 14 and will hopefully be around for a long time yet!!!!

Am sending a few of you PMs, and to those that have already PM'ed me thankyou, and please keep the ideas coming, personal recommendations greatly appreciated!
