My husband has a new job in Newton Abbot so I've lost my unpaid groom this winter and also have a 1 year old baby to look after! We'll be staying in Cardiff until we can sell our house so time and money will be short for a while so I need to find a solution for my horse!

I have a bit of a dilemma....I've advertised her for full-loan here in Cardiff, to stay on her current yard so I can keep track of her but not had any takers yet. The problem is that soon the horses will have to come in every night and as she's on DIY livery (no other option at the yard) this will be very difficult for me with the baby not being able to lend a hand!! I work full-time 9-5 so it would mean really early mornings and late dinner & bed for the baby which isn't fair on her.

So, my other option is to move her down to Devon on full-livery, or some sort of working livery/loan to a riding centre. Since money is going to be tight, I'd rather not have to pay for full-livery, but I haven't managed to find anywhere offering working livery as yet!

Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions? Ultimately I'll be looking for somewhere on DIY or part livery for her near Newton Abbot so any recommendations (or places to avoid!) will be great too!

Thanks!

If you are considering full working livery it may be worth contacting Bicton College who take horses on full livery and the students ride them - though during the holidays I think you have to pay more or look after them yourselves.

There are a few riding schools which I think are in my answer in the above thread including, Hayes and Finlake

If it helps i studied at Bicton for 3 years (about 10 years ago) and sent my youngster there for a year and best thing i had ever done with her!! She cam eon leaps and bounds was well looked after and exercised almost every day. They worked around her quibbles, she liked to stay out so they did that. You only pay for half of farrier and worming and the excess on your vet insurance. In the holidays you can either bring her home or just pay livery to keep her there. Any questions on it at all please ask, i have a few friends that are involved in the teaching/yard that i went to college with; its a friendly environment

If you would consider turning your horse away for a few months contact HenryHorn on here. She has a fantastic place near Moretonhampstead (half an hour ish from Newton Abbot and takes non-ridden horses who get checked on everyday but otherwise live an extremely happy and natural lifestyle in large groups with loads of land to roam around on. I keep my horses there, albeit under a different arrangement and I couldnt recommend it enough. I have never seen horses so happy, relaxed and well looking and I dont think there are many horses to whom it would be harmful to turn them away for a few months. It would give you some time off to get settled as well and I know that you would be made to feel welcome to go up there as often or as little as you liked.

Thanks guys for all your help! I have been in touch with henryhorn - not entirely sure that would be suitable since she's a TB, especially if it's a wet winter (though hopefully it won't be as wet in Devon as it is here in Wales!) since she is prone to mud fever, but it is still an option.
Fingers crossed the perfect home will be found soon!
