We are hopefully looking to buy a house with land and relocating to Perthshire soon. Hopefully, Blairgowrie sort of area. Please can any of you help me with regard to best farrier, vets, feed merchants etc. We are really looking forward to going but at the same time it's all rather scarey as it will be a massive move for us.
many thanks for your help.

This is where I get my feed:

None of the farriers I know will travel out as far as Blairgowrie or I'd give you their numbers

My vets (not sure if they travel to Blairgowrie but I highly recommend them if they do

Like Kao, I use McCashs for feed & horsey bits and bob.

My vets are Tay Vally Vets: http://www.perthvets.co.uk They have a big horsey side to the practice - Jamie Gartside has a good way with horses and is very knowledgable.

I don't know where your interests lie, but there is a pleasure ride in Blairgowrie in September, run by the Scottish Endurance Riding Club: www.scottishendurance.com The Tayside branch website is: http://www.freewebs.com/serctayside

It is a lovely part of the world. Good luck with the move.

Many thanks for your help. At the moment we do mainly dressage. We used to jump but spinal surgery (mine) has put pay to that so stressage it is! However, after our recent holiday up there and seeing the amazing hacking we might just become happy hackers. What sort of prices do you pay for hay, shavings, shoes etc. I come from a rather expensive part of the UK so I'm hoping they will be a bit cheaper. This will be the first time I have had a horse at home so it will be rather odd. I would like to get involved in local riding clubs etc so that I can meet other people and have a bit of fun. Will keep you all posted as to progress and to our final whereabouts. Kettle is always on. x

Thank you I will do that. When we finally get to know a date I will let you know. I have a ID/TB 17yr old mare. A real sweetie. First time I will have had a horse at home so will seem rather strange not having a whole livery yard so will be good to meet up with someone.

i second tay valley vets!!!
can find out what farriers does blairgowrie area for you.

can also get feed from davidsons. they in bliargowrie and deliver too!!!

i live/work/teach 30 mins from where you going so PM me if you want!!!

I third Tay Valley Vets. Especially Jamie Gartside....he's brill with horses and such a nice person to boot.

Shop at McCash's too for feed.

Not sure about farriers as mine isn't taking on anyone else. Think Neil Chalmers is your best bet as he works all hours!

Thanks. I will contact you again nearer the time we move. It will be a while yet as we have to finish the sale of our house before we can proceed with the Scottish house. Not good for the nerves!

Hi Auntie_Mags

I used to live just outside Blairgowrie and am now in Perth. I always used Davidson's for feed and you used to get about a 15% discount if you were an account holder, not sure if they still do the same deal though. I used to groom for my trainer who is one of the top dressage riders in the area and there is a fantastic dressage community round there. The local RC is very strong and there is also Tayside Dressage Group. http://www.taysidedressage.co.uk/content/index.htm oh and my mother is the local friendly judge!!

I had a great contact for hay, not always the cheapest but would always get me the best quality. Vets I would recommend the local one in Blair for small animals and Fair City Vets for the horses and for farriers I avoid the one mentioned above!! I have been with mine for the last 19 years and trust him implicilty.

Please feel free to get in touch when you move. Its a minefield moving horses and building up your own contacts!!

Hi Olivio,

Thank you very much for replying. I'm really excited about the amount of people who have been in touch and look forward to meeting you all. I will definitely be in touch when we finally move and look forward to joining the clubs. Thanks again.
