I've read lots of posts about remedial shoeing. We have a few horses on the yard that also have different things done.

I was just wondering:

1) What sort of different shoes/shoeing have you had or seen done?

2) What was the reason for it?

Plastic Imprint shoes for a 17.2hh laminitic...it worked too, except he did pull them off frequently :(

Heart bars for a cob laminitic

Stewart clogs for a chronic laminitic, they do seem to be working extremely well:)

Mine currently has eggbars on her fronts for her mini-laminitis that she had this summer and rolled toes and lateral extensions behind for her spavins. It is getting to be over a hundred pounds a set every five weeks and I am toying with the idea of just pulling them all and going barefoot...

Mine had lateral extensions behind for a while to help with hock spavins. I believe they help to stabilise the rather odd movement that horses with spavins can develop...he no longer has them and he is moving much better without them! Although his movement was straighter in the LEs, his stride was shorter and he struggled to track up. Now he overtracks easily and is generally far more comfortable without.

Same horse has Natural Balance shoes in front to help with ringbone and stumbling - they are fab.

We've got one at the yard with egg bars - not sure what for, the owner just said "he's lame without them". Presumably something navicular related?

If you can manage barefoot, go for it. Best thing I ever did for my laminitic.

i was in the same situation! Mine had aluminium straight bars on infront and lateral extensions behind. This was just short of £100 every six weeks. And on top of that he pulled one off atleast once or twice a week even with over reach boots on! He has bone spavins in both hocks and navicular. Took them off and went for the barefoot option and its the best thing i ever did!! he sound and his feet look great and its only £20 every six weeks! ;-)

Mine has heart bars with full / extended frog supports for thin soles on the front. First set i've ever had on a horse. It is amazing how much growth has occured in his soles since they have been on. Haven't had to pay for a set yet, so i have that shock to come! I'm equally tempted by barefoot as he is a native mix.

Pads in feet to help with concussion a farrier gave her by letting her toe grow too long >:( It was a niggling, horrible lameness that we couldn't pinpoint, but she had remedial shoeing and was done by head farrier for no extra cost as his farrier had done it.

Needless to say, changed farriers!
