Having had the dentist out who found sharp, but not terrible teeth and having a chat to the vet, we brought him in and decided to see what happened.
Within a couple of weeks he began to perk back up and the problems he was having chewing resolved and he is back to hoovering up any and everything.
He has put on a lot of weight, to the point you can barely feel his ribs, he has LOTS of energy now, to the point he jumped out... Twice! When he felt he'd had enough
he brought himself in
he's had the run of the place and got the girls wrapped round his hoof!
I've spread the word about his availability as a hack, light schooling horse, given his jumping exploits I think he is maybe not quite ready to do nothing.
I'm going to turn him back out 24/7 from tomorrow but with a rug, the forecast is cold but dry and at the hint of him not coping we will bring him back in. He will be going out with the brood mares so will be being fed each day and as always will have adlib hay.
It's hard as he has lost topline and so isn't going to look like he did, but I'm confident that he has now got a good covering and given his tendency to balloon in the summer I think now is about the right time.
Thanks for all your suggestions.
