anyone else get it right?

IIRC it's very similar to the wedding ring test where the (old-fashioned) doctor dangles the wedding ring on a thread over the mother-to-be's tummy and if it rotates one way it's a boy, if the other it's a girl. He then tells m-t-b which sex it is and traditionally writes down the other sex on the baby's due date. When baby is born if it's what was expected then he's right, and if it's not he shows his diary and says - "no you must have heard wrong" and shows what he wrote down - so he's still right!

You hang a nail or bolt on a piece of string and suspend it over the mares loins, supposedly if it is a filly it will circle and a colt it will swing along the spine.

It was right for mine last year, this year I have had a 100% fail rate! The colt was a filly, and the filly was twin colts (although being twins may have confused it!)
However, it never fails in telling me whether a mare IS in foal or not...disclaimer here: Fun only, does not replace Veterinary advice/care.

Springfallstud, filly, colt, whatever it is, I hope all goes well. It would be nice if you got your filly though. Good Luck.

Vert interesting and not bad results for a bit of fun lol

Cruiseline i put the nail over the back of mine last year before the vet had even scanned them for the first time!!! and a few times after with consistent results

i also did the nail test

but as some of you have already said, I also did it before the vet came for first scan, this year before he came I did both mares both said colt, so we shall see next year

At what stage of pregnancy do you hang the nail??????????

[/ QUOTE ]

Cruiseline, I did it a couple of days after the last service on all the mares, it moved everytime. My stallion seems to be quite fertile, he never has mares come back into season. My Vet thinks I am bonkers, but considers that a normal affliction amongst the English, so humours me.

I do it, purely out of interest (and when I wonder why there is a big bolt with a piece of baler cord attached in my grooming box) several times throughout pregnancy and not ONCE has the nail ever changed its' mind and circled instead of swung or vice versa........even when it did get it wrong. I am going to use a new piece of metalware this season, just in case the old one is faulty!

Hmmmm....I had a mare in to be covered yesterday, just because I could I (well, my daughter, so that it wasn't me sending any signals) did the nail thing, no result at all, or on the stallion....Good! or on a yearling filly, also good!

So, she was covered yesterday afternoon, and this morning I did the test again........it span round in crazy circles! On the control horses it still had no movement. So what is that? Less than 24 hours after her first service.

Time (and the Vet) will tell of course.
