Remote radio fences

Does anybody use one of these. I am debating one as I am getting fed up of the dogs wandering off while I am mucking out and dont want to have to keep my eye on them when they are outside and I am worried they will end up getting lost. The collars look massive though.
Any experiences or things to avoid.

Hi I bought a fence system but never got round to using it, but 2 of my friends use them for their dogs and they are great! So on that I would say very effective and well worth it!!

I ended up getting the remote control collar on my dog, as I needed control at the yard and at home so it was the best option. Using it has made him a lot more obedient, mine has a warning beep on it, like the remote fence does, and if he starts to wander and ignores my shout, he gets a warning beep and usually comes straight back.
There are a lot of people who don't agree with these shock collars but if I hadn't got one for my dog, he'd probably have ended up being hurt or causing an accident as he would always run off (And yes I did try conventional methods first!!)
We have since got one for our Rottie as she has become a sheep killer... (She has killed 5 of ours in the last 2 years) the option was to rehome her, have her PTS or try the collar, we still have to keep an eye on her so she doesn't slink off out of sight, but she is a lot more obedient and therefore less likely to slink off trouble making!!

I was told they were crap, her dog either sat by it until the battery went dead (because it gave a warning noise) or ran straight through it. I guess its like electric fencing with horses, some horses respect it, others just barge through it regardless!

I have no experience of them personally but have read that some dogs will break through and then be too frightened to come back.

Severnmiles: What a clever dog, wiating for the battery to run out! As for running through them - we have a friend with a beagle (bought before she realised what they're like!) and they've been told to use an 'invisible fence' collar for a larger dog to make him respect the shock. It works! So..... perhaps your friend needs to do the same thing (and check the batteries!)
Why would we think shock collars are a bad idea but use electric fencing for our horses? Hmmmm.....
Ravenwood - The Beagle I was talking about did break through and, yes, was disinclined to come back via the same route but it has since made him very respectful of it. He no longer goes close enough to get a shock so it's been very effective.

We know a collar based electric fence wouldnt work with our Doberman as he is immune to pain and already worked out that citronella and batteries are finite things.......

So we have bitten the bullet and 6 foot fenced an entire 4 acre field (4 1/2 ft of horse weldmesh and 2 electric wires above that)

It looks like Stalag 9 ))but we have livestock nearby and 3 weeks residential training didnt improve his recall much so Im not taking the risk with his or their lives......
