Removal of ovaries

Has anyone had this operation done to their mare, if so how long does it take for the hormones to settle down and how long before you brought your horse back into work and were you able to lunge them first or ride them in walk etc.
 
This will be interesting. I thought it was a highly specialised operation and also very expensive. I thought it was only done on high value competition mare's who were unreliable when in season.
 
I know for sure that's not the case. It was suggested for my mare, who although is a competition horse, she's not worths a fortune. I also know of someone else who had a mare that has this procedure. I was also told it was a very simple op.
 
I was led to believe that it was quite a routine operation, it was a key hole procedure and she was done under sedation. She had the operation 5 weeks ago and has 3 small scars on her left and a larger scar on her right where both ovaries were removed. My horse is only 10 and a riding club type of horse. She experience alot of pain with her seasons and would be in season 24/7, we tried her with regumate which helped but she became completely dependent on it.
 
mine had hers removed in a standing operation. the difference with her was immediate. i left her for about 5/6 months before getting back on but i think they suggested 2/3 i cant remember right now. regumate did nothing to her. much happier horse now! feel free to ask any Qs
 
I have seen a number of these surgeries carried out under sedation on standing horses and ponies of all descriptions. Laparascopic procedures have come on in leaps and bounds so although it is not a simple operation, it is a lot less traumatic than a GA and major abdominal surgery. I have only ever heard of good outcomes from it.
 
the cost of the op is about £1500 - 2000. it is done standing via lapascopic and the horse is usually back up to pre op work load by day 30.

We are looking at this for my mare as she has awfully painful seasons too
 
Hi We had a mare when i was alot younger who started thinking she was a stallion. mounting mares in field and all sorts . anyway we had the vet out and they done the op on her. Back then dad reckons it cost him about 1000 . she was fine after that . she was ridden better and could be let out as a mare rather than a loony, We had a brilliant vet and she was very well looked after.
