Removing rubber stud plugs

How on Earth do I get rubber stud plugs out of stud holes !!!!!!!!
Farriers nail is out of the question as he won’t be back out before I’m going to use my studs, I stupidly forgot to say to him when he was out last time

Curved awl, commonly used by saddle fitters, even easier/better than a straight awl. Greased cotton wool was always the filler back in my day.

I just leave them empty and then clean them out and put in these the morning of/ night before the event:

Stud Hole Stoppers

Fills gaps in the shoe when studs are not in use to prevent them filling with debris.

It works for me leaving them empty but I don't know if that's just me and others wouldn't agree with that.
