is the tool i need to remove a shoe a nipper?? the mare has stood on her own inside front and bent a nail over. luckily its not poking out. farrier said it would be fine till he comes on thurs but i may need to cut the nail if it starts sticking out. but i thought ideally i should buy the tools for removing shoes when needed and get farrier to show me on thurs.
 
i think you are right to get the tools and ask the farrier to show you, i think everyone should be able to remove a shoe in case of emergencies

you need a hammer, buffer (think with sharp flat metal edge for knocking ends of clenches up), big pair of those pincer-like things to jack shoe off, and there's also a great tool for pulling the nails out one at a time by grasping the heads from underneath, if like me you're not strong enough to pull them all out with the shoe.
the saddlery catalogues etc usually have the tools with names, sorry, don't know all of them! a rasp to neaten up any rough bits is a good idea too... and a farrier's apron is a must so you don't get your legs ripped to bits if the horse fidgets while you've got its hoof between your knees.
i've got all my own kit and it's a godsend... no more panicking if a horse spreads a shoe etc.
a junior hacksaw will do to take the top off the nail, as long as the horse is patient!
 
kerilli , do you find other people borrow your stuff? i seem to be the only one at my yard with the tools and people are forever asking can i borrow your hoof thingies...
 
luckily ive never had to do it yet as horse has fabby feet always has done and i do very little to them really. but i keep meaning to learn and buy the tools but just havnt got round to it yet. no one on my yard has any tools that i know of!
 
mines got good feet too, but you know what horses are like, can half rip a shoe off but the other half is welded on. better to be able to remove it than have an accident waiting for the farrier
 
lol, obviously lacking imagination, whoever called it that...if a hammer wasnt already called a hammer theyd probably call them nail-bangy-in-thingies

Spangle, i've got my own yard and don't do liveries any more cos they drove me completely crackers borrowing my stuff. one of the final straws was a livery asking if she could borrow my mini-clippers to hog her horse. i said yes, went out for a long hack, came back to find her finishing a full clip with them. she was amazed that i was angry... i thought she had a bloody cheek!
 
ah, wish i had my own yard *sigh*
i get a bit fed up with stuff being borrowed, im always asked first, but no-one ever has first aid stuff, ever!
 
it's a bit of a nightmare, tbh. and liveries breaking things, and then being really stroppy if asked to contribute to the cost of a new one... don't get me started...

i know i'm very lucky to have my own yard. i was a livery for years, and i hope i wasn't someone's nightmare!
