A good friend of mine has an adult working cocker who has just been diagnosed with kidney disease. She has been advised by the vet to try Hills renal prescription diet but it’s making her dog sick. He is also quite sensitive to chicken and often gets diarrhoea after chicken so she tries to avoid this, but many of them are chicken based.
He is normally on a grain free diet.
Friend is up the wall with him as he’s quite a high maintenance dog in general and he doesn’t tolerate stress/illness/change very well at all.

Any recommendations or advice for managing him? The kidney disease was found completely by chance when he had bloods for something unrelated.

We sadly lost our lad last month , he’d had renal disease for 2 years . He was doing fine on R:C renal kibble till he developed pancreatitis (it’s 18% fat !). We put him on Rocco tinned renal food and he loved it . It’s only available from Zooplus but definitely worked for him until the disease became too much 😢.

We fed ours a mix of the royal canin renal kibble and some of the tinned as a topper for taste for about five years till she sadly deteriorated

Ours had to be on a renal-friendly diet for years. He ate the Virbac Renal kibble fine, but initially we had got a doggie nutrionist to do a diet plan - it was cooked chicken, rice and courgettes, but he went off it. It was years ago, so can't remember the quantities of each.

Our boy was on Royal Canine(Which i hated but was about the only renal food he would eat)
Towards the end he wouldn't eat anything so we gave him steak, beef, chicken. Basically anything he wanted or would eat and keep down.

I’m feeding my girl different dog low phosphorus and purine wet food which is mainly turkey and white fish with veg. They deliver it frozen I also give her Purina renal kibble she’s doing well and has put on much needed weight.
