Renaming a horse discuss

mine came with no name, no passport, so had to name her.
either that or call her 'horsey'. She has been Brooke for 5 years now and it really suits her.

i used to share a horse with a friend, she was called 'lugs' (the horse, not the friend). i always called her lugs when speaking to her, but avoided the question if anyone asked her name. if pressed would say luigi or lola

Bart, Tart etc?

No, you are quite right. I like that name, definitely not run of the mill is it?

I bought my tb when he was 3 and he was called George. It really didn't suit him and the only horse ever to put me in hospital was called George. He is now nearly 30 and is fit and well. So I would not have a problem changing a name if I felt the need.

I have renamed horses - Porridge was actually called COTTAGE when I got her, there was no way that was staying, so she became Porridge as it almost sounds the same if you say it the right way

YO said I should have called her Pie LOL!

Splodge was called Narcos after his sire when I bought him.

My horse's old owner renamed him. He started off as Spider, before she decided to call him Hullabaloo - apparently because of the amount of noise he made calling to other horses the first couple of times she took him to shows.

I think it is unlucky.
I bought two of my three, and they had been named by their first owners, so I kept them. Tbh, they aren't bad names, and are short and practical.
Instead of risking the wrath of the devils by renaming - why don't you add a name...relegating the original name?

My husband has kind of done this with our new one!

The new horse is called Lanky (HATE it) because he is 17.33 (original), and my husband calls him Lanky-Wanky

He says he doesn't mean anything by it but grrrr!

I have taken to calling him Louis and must say that it's pretty much stuck. Most of the time he's a Lou, which started because when he arrived I was calling him Lanky-Lou. I dropped the Lanky bit because I hate saying it, and it became Lou, but I also add is on the end so that it comes out Loueeeeeeee sometimes!

ETS: He chewed his name plaque last week when he was bored as he was in for the day. I think now might be a time to get a new plaque that doesn't say Lanky. He is only 7.

Not helpful to your question but I found it funny.... A person I know bought a horse from Mark Phillips his stable name was Bran. They later found out his stable name was actually Brown (named after his colour) but they misunderstood the posh accent and called him Bran instead of Brown

My pony was called sandy when the people before us got her - very original given she's palomino. Her old owners hated it, and changed it to Savannah, which I'm glad about as I love her name. She has been an absolute star for me, so I can't say it's bad luck!

A pony I used to ride used to be called Tony, but is now Jack. Years ago, he was used in a riding school, and his name was changed after he dumped one to many children - his owner told all the kids that he was a new pony called Jack, and that Tony had been sold!

PF has had loads of names! Wouldn't you rename a horse called Charlie Big Potato? So, she became Starling, but here in Argentina they say it Estarrrrleeeeeng so THAT had to change, and CBP was FAR too long. In the end a groom named her Papa Frita (which means chip- of the fried variety) and I thought it was funny, so I kept it

I have renamed two, one was Daisy, I hated it and it really did not suit her. The other was called Jube, and I renamed her Jude. Both are absoltely wonderful and, to date, have not caused me any ectra problems to normal.

The lady I bought my 3 yr old off changed his name. He is now called Indie...he used to be called....Dennis.

So yes, sometimes a name change is a good thing.

I also have a mare that was called Elme, I didn't like it and changed it to Belle, she learn it within a week so she must have liked it.

I always keep passport names the same though.

We changed ours from Goldie to Shoni. He never answered to Goldie anyway and was a little bugga who had come from a rough home.
Since we have called him Shoni he has turned around and become a cracking friend to my daughter.
the other reasoning behind the name change is that a 5 year old screaming Goldie sounds gruff and aggressive now she has to whisper...Shhhhhhhh oni!!

so it looks fairly split on the whether to change the name or not.
I wonder if there is a web site to give you good ideas on names.
i would love to change the horses name and then i know he is truly ours but i am scared that i will get struck by lightening or something mad like that.......lol

I changed one of my horses names, but not the other. I dont think its wrong after all so long as you try and keep the sound similar, its not like they know!

I've always had TB's who have had names registered with Weatherby's (at great expense!) so I have not changed any. Their stable names have usually been shortened versions of their racing names - 'Se-Aq' (Sid), 'To Be Fair' (To-be) etc.

Ahh, we re-named bob simply because the Y/O got him for us and didnt think to ask the owners his name! After 2 weeks, becasue he came on trial too begin with, we got the passport by which time he was known as bob around the place, turned out his name was rusty, which we all hated as its a name for a hampster or something like that, we stuck with bob, after 8 months today... He will respond too bob
