I bought a renault master horsebox conversion a few months ago and on the whole am very pleased with it. However I have noticed that it occasionally jumps out of first gear - most commonly when doing hill starts. Does anyone have a similiar problem or can advise why it might be doing this?!
Thanks

Its a bit hard to explain if you have never taken a gearbox apart,To keep it simple ,one reason is wear in the gearbox, but jumping out ofgear is usually in top gear where the first and third motion shafts are directly connected using a tapered dog clutch.Jumping out in first gear though may be due to a gear likage problem and it not fully engaging as well.
Make sure the horsebox body is not fouling the linkage,if it is the box then its an exchange gearbox.

We have had Masters in the not too distant past and both had gear problems from 70,000 miles. Apparently there is a known wear problem aroud this time. Don't know if this is connected to your problem or not, sorry.

It was the gearbox bearings by all account (or so my OH tells me - him being the technical one). We had a reconditioned one put in at a cost of between £400-£500. It cost around £250 for the gearbox but the garage that supplied it was different to the one that took it out and then put it back in again so there was albour costs in doing that aswell. Then the relevant fluids to top back up.

OH has also reminded me that we only had it changed on one of the boxes, the 52 reg. The older Y reg had a gearbox whine to it but it was sold prior to any faults coming to light.
NB, the new owner was told about it!

I had mine stick in 1st gear!! Then another time it would only select 2nd or 4th.
It was the gear linkage cable (from the gear lever to the gearbox) wearing - I learned how to push it back on, but eventually replaced it this March.
Be careful though - even with the VIN, registration and model, Renault Trucks had to see the actual part to get me the correct one - there are 3 different versions!
Mine cost £97 or so and £20 to fit by my friendly mechanic.
