I've recently bought a cracking second-hand Renault Master, 51 plate, nice professional conversion, chuffed to bits with it. It's a side load/unload and the horses travel backwards. The only worry I have is that if you have 2 horses on board, then when you arrive at your destination and drop the side ramp, there is nothing preventing the nearest horses from trying to get out immediately, ie no bar or chain or anything doing the same work as a breech bar would. I'm minded to get something fitted - just a token so the horse can feel and see a restraint when the ramp is dropped. Anyone else been in this position? I don't know whether a standard part from a horse box spares site would lend itself to being fitted? Or what about one of those stable door thick chains covered in heavy duty pvc? Any experience or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I have a Malborough and they have put in a heavy duty canvas line with big clips on both ends. You wouldn't want to drop the ramp and leave it down with just that there but it does give you enough time to get up to untie, etc before the horse unloads itself. I can take pics later if you like.

We had the same concern when I built my wifes box so I added gates to it.
They are not the normal glassonite ones as would be too heavy.
I made them out of 2 pices of 3.6mm white faced ply with a 6mm ply piece in the middle. The 6mm ply had lots of holes cut in it to reduce weight then whole thing edged in ali with an ali fastner.
Because the gates are light I could then use light weight hinges aswell.
Works very well for very little additional weight.

Our has a seatbelt so it retracts fully out of the way when we aren't using it. The clip is at the front of the box with the reel in the tack locker coming through a letterbox type hole into the horse part. Same principal as the canvas line though so that might be easier to do as an addition

Oh wow! Thanks guys for some brill solutions. Juno, your box gates look ace. Also love the idea of a seat belt. Not sure what a canvas line is pricklyflower so have PMed you. Thanks again everyone x
