Renegade boot fitting, was it too tight?!

Well yesterday I tried for the first time my new renegade hoof boots! My mare had previously been wearing cavallo sport boots so is used to wearing boots.
I fitted the boots as best I could before the ride adjusting the cables etc to make a good fit. Put the boots on and did the bottom strap reasonably tight thinking it would help keep them on better, walked around the yard in hand and they didn't move!
On I hopped and we set off to the orchards next door, got about 300 yards down the road and a pigeon jumped out the hedge spooking all 3 horses. Mine jumped and then shot sideways, I then noticed a boot laying on the verge so that was obviously the reason for her shooting sideways. I asked her to walk on as we were in the road and she started bronking (my horse is not a bronker so very out of character) I fell but managed to land on my feet and noticed the other boot had also flown off so again that was obviously the reason for that! Both boots had unattached from the heel captivator so both in pieces. Luckily nothing had broken, the wire had just come out but now I am quite worried seeing as how easy this happened!!

Where am I going wrong?! Any advice would be much appreciated!
 
Hi, I have renegade and have never had this problem.

Have you ever adjusted the wires at all at the front? I wonder if the screws are loose/missing who he's hold the wires in place which would explain the heel captivator and boot becoming separate.
 
The Renegade site has a very good instruction video and step by step guide to adjusting the boots to fit. Perhaps you accidentally missed out a step which caused the boots to slip. It might be worth checking. Renegade have an excellent reputation and this seems out of character for them.
 
I would think that one of 2 things happened. Either you simply didn't tighten the bottom strap sufficiently. Alternatively I don't see how the wire came out. You say you adjusted the cables to get the fit. Presumably you pulled the adjusted (round dome at the front) out and then loosened the screws, lengthened or shortened the wires and screwed them up again?
I wonder if they were not screwed up tightly enough after adjustment? I cannot see any other way the wire would come out.
Possibly if the screws were not tight enough all the wires pulled looser giving the effect of boots where the bottom strap wasn't tight enough.
Hope this makes sense.

I cannot begin to guess how many miles I have done in renegades and this hasn't happened ever. Once you get them adjusted they are fine. Mine go through very deep and sucking bogs and still stay on. They are the boots that I trust the most.

The renegade site certainly has some good videos. If you put your area there may be someone local who could give you some help.

Can you explain precisely how you adjusted the cables? this may give a clue as to what has gone wrong.
 
I adjusted them with the centre screw part, so the cables were slid along to sufficient 'dots' and then tightened and popped back in, does that make sense? I think when shr spooked she must have trod on herself and pulled it off, I wonder if maybe I didn't do the screws up enough as like I say the wires came out without breaking and boot wasn't broken anywhere! I think I am going to have to try again, maybe adjust a little more and see how it is.

How tight do I want to do the wire strap done up?

yes I understand how you adjusted them. They are not the easiest boots, so bloomin fiddly!
If one had come off I would agree about the spooking but if it was both I think it was the adjustment and the screws were simply not done up tight enough. Can you re do them and do them as tight as you can and then practice trying to pull the captivator off using a lot of force by hand before you put them back on the horse ie that the wires don't pull through (if that makes sense)

I do the bottom strap up pretty tight with a fair amount of force. I use them on mud and surfaces that would pull them off otherwise. They are very different from the cavallo which are basically a pretty loose fitting boot for fastening. Possibly think of tensioning the bottom strap more. Perhaps you could try lunging or something where you can watch her moving in them before getting back on board.
 
I wonder if this is where I was going wrong, I didn't do them as tight as I could as the instructions on the renegade site said that too tight could be worse than too loose.... I wonder if it will be a bit of trial and error!
That's a really good idea to try and pull them off myself as judging by her reaction yesterday I am slightly worried it may happen again when I am out alone or at speed as it might not end so well!

it is very much trial and error with these. My first ride with my new pair of renegades and I lost one. It just came off. I was suprised as I had used the previous ones for months with no problems. It was a case of learning the tension on the bottom strap and after a couple more rides I was totally confident again and forgot them.
If you are worried turn her out in the field and let her canter in them loose. You wil quickly gain confidence when you see her twist and turn in them. Alternatively you will see any problems. Good luck

I am really hoping this was the problem! I have emailed Hoof Bootique which is where I got them from and Liz has been more than helpful and agreed that it was more than likely a case of me having not done the screws up tight enough and allowed the wires to slide out! I will give them a go again next time I ride off road, maybe even in the school and see how I get on!
Just need to get my confidence back with them now...
