I'm about to start using boots for the first time - these boots in particular. They are only going on the backs as the fronts are shod.
Do you find them easy to use? Any tips for their fitting? Opinions in general most welcome.

Yes renegades are very easy to get on and off. The only issue I've had is my big moving cobs forging them off, but you won't have that problem on the hinds.

I use renegade classics. The renegades are the best boots IMHO. They are not as quick to put on as some others eg gloves as you have to thread the straps though the loops and I also undo both the top and bottom straps on mine. However that tiny point is well overshadowed by their efficiency on the horse. They also have very good grip.

I find they size pretty small and my 140 x 140mm front foot fits into a 4WW ie 152 x 152 and then only just width wise so I would be careful if you are sizing just by measurements especially with the vipers.

If you are inexperienced at fitting them I would consider a fit kit to try and get the best size. Have you chosen the vipers over the classics for any reason? (other than fitting) I am sure the vipers may be the better of the renegades but for some such as mine the classics are more appropriate.

If you have doubts over the length I would go for the ordinary length as it is easy to cut them back yourself. You cannot add length on!!

FW, what size do you use for Daisy? I could really use some, but haven't quite got round to considering it seriously yet...

Massive monster ones 😂 She has the feet of a 16.2. 4ww I think they are. The biggest they make. I got them second hand. I've actually rarely used them because if we canter she pulls them off and her feet are now fine anyway (did use them recently when she had had her foot in a bucket for 2 weeks with the abscesses as was worried about her getting another one when her foot might be compromised anyway). I've used them on P as well but had the same issue with her forging them off in canter. I think I could probably rasp a bit off and cure it but I was thinking I don't need them so would sell them. Then had all the rain which I think caused all the horrible little abscess inducing stones on the road and decided I better keep them for such times as those.

They are definitely the best, in my opinion, comparing to cavallos and easyboots. Cavallos would be OK if only walking and short hacks on non muddy ground but they rubbed D and also my last horse on longer hacks. Easy boots are ok but I have epics and the clip thing is a nightmare to get on and off.

I think Kallibear on here had some 3ww and a pair of big gloves for sale (was a while ago tho).

Thanks for that info.
I haven't had any experience fitting and have just gone off the info on their website. He measured 130 x 130 which they don't have, so I got 135 x 135. I wonder if they are going to be too small, going by what you have said? I haven't received them yet.
I went for the vipers as they read to be the 'top/latest' model. I hadn't known about the fit kit. I must check that out, although it may be too late.

don't worry, they can always go back if necessary. Don't forget to put a towel on the floor and your foot in a plastic bag when trying them on to keep them clean just in case. Fit is very determined by hoof shape, you won't know till you try.

I believe the vipers has a captivator (bit that goes over the heels) that fits more closely. My lad is a haflinger with large heels so that sort of thing wouldn't work and the wider captivator of the classics works better.

I have a big ISH with large feet, low heels and medial flare due to conformation. Oh, and he moves like an over excited warmblood.

Almost all boots are too long and not wide enough. He over reaches EVERYTHING off. Renegades (which I did sell, sorry. Still got the 3W gloves kicking about somewhere tho) last about 4seconds in trot. Gloves don't fare much better.

Trainer types (cavallo/jogging shoes etc) run him quickly.

However I've just bought him scoot boots and so far so good. We practised out trot up in hand for tomorrow's show in them last night (cue snorting dragon 'I'm a Stallion' bouncing) and they're were still on!!!

On paper they shouldn't work for his flat, flared, squint, slightly under-run feet but they're great. He's 2 sizes smaller than the chart suggests (hence needing a fit kit!) but fingers crossed.

Anyways, I digress.

I quite liked the Renegades but they are big and bulky and don't work at all for over-reachers. However that shouldn't be an issue for hind feet. They are fine to put on although the velcro is a bit fiddly. Easier than many as they just slip on.
Make sure the feet are recently trimmed and get the smallest size that comfortably fits. The measuring charts are often next to useless.

I've used Renegade classics for the last 7 years (before most UK folks knew what boots were!) and absolutely love them. Vipers have more tread depth I believe but I've never needed more grip. I lose grip on hard ground with wet grass and I don't think more tread would help me there. Only just thinking of replacing them with a new pair. I do find the affect movement slightly so wouldn't gallop in them or canter in holding ground. My little Andalusian x is the opposite of FW's Daisy and wears size 0!

I second giving them a try on in a clean environment first: my pony measured for 130x130, and we've ended up with 135x140. Contact Liz at the Hoofbootique for fitting help; she's excellent and does a try and hire programme.

Gave the Spooky Pony's new pair (on trial) a good trial of mountaineering last weekend, am very pleased, and really noticed the grippiness (compared to his somewhat worn Classics). :)

Would the renagrades be better than gloves on very stony ground? I use gloves at the moment, but was thinking of changing as he seems to feel the large stones through them, most of our off road tracks are very stony.
