Probably a pointless post but getting fed up with well meaning people telling me to just get rid of the dogs.

I had a tied cottage with my job on the farm so no prob with the dogs at all. Sadly that ended as the farm was sold and where I have moved to is a total disaster, the only plus point being I have the dogs with me.

So I have been back to looking at properties to rent, but as soon as you mention a dog, never mind three, none of the agencies are interested at all. My dogs aren't destructive and could be out with me most of the day and I have offered to pay a higher deposit too but still no joy.

So anyone got any suggestions, or a little property in Sussex I could rent or do some work in lieu of rent???

Dont mention the dogs to letting agents - they will automatically discount you immediately. Find suitable properties, go and view, then if you like the place and have shown what a fine upstanding citizen you are to the letting agents you can mention the dogs and ask them to discuss with the landlord.

If you are someone who can move in quickly and start paying rent - and can also offer a higher damage deposit and a guarantee that the carpets will be professionally cleaned when you leave - then landlords can be a lot more flexible than you would expect :D

I've rented for the past 9 years (OMG really that long???!!!) with between 2 and 4 dogs, I know it is do-able so don't give up :)

As Lévrier said don't mention the dogs until you've viewed and are ready to make an offer. Expound on the reasons that you would be a brilliant tenant - employment history, bank statements, references, guarantor, increased deposit, ability to move in ASAP, anything you can offer that will go in your favour before mentioning that by the way I have dogs, I'm sure that won't be a problem...

Of the last four I enquired about only one flatly refused to consider dogs, the other three were fine despite the adverts stating no pets. The clincher for us is that I work in a veterinary surgery, they seem to like that, so if you work in an animal related industry or can take the dogs to work with you be sure to mention it loudly and often!

Estate properties are almost always dog friendly and privately administrated but around here they almost never have to advertise, it's all word of mouth and waiting lists. Depending on what sort of dogs you have it could be worth putting the feelers out among the shooting community.

I rent out a house through an agency and I was never even asked about pets, the agents put no pets on the list automatically so certainly worth asking.

My Tennant has a dog and I'm happy with that, prefer it to children to be honest. Get the agency to actually ask the landlord rather than say no without checking

often a landlord will say yes and just ask for a slightly bigger deposit so maybe suggest that as an option

I used to rent out my cottage, because it was on an old farm and I didn't want to spend a fortune on it, its being demolished so I actively sought out someone with a dogs. You have to pay an extra deposit and pay to have the carpets cleaned on leaving.
