Renting a couple of acres with a field shelter....if you don't require facilities......is it a viable option than DIY livery in the NW?

Or do you have to be super rich/or a farmer's daughter?
 
You have just got to go a round knocking on doors and asking.

Trouble is people prefer to rent to farmers with a few sheep as they are not there all year round, they don't make much mess.
 
Thats what i do. I rent nearly 3 acres with a field shelter which i can use as a stable as it has hardcore floor with rubber mats and a door. I love it, nobody there judging you and my field is nice and flat and very dry so i can actually ride lunge etc in the field so even though i dont have a school its not an issue for most of the year.
 
I rent 15 acres from a farmer, has saved us a fortune. Plus he would never have sheep on his land again as they were dreadful for escaping, and the people who had them weren't very good about checking them.
 
I'm not in the north west but I'm going to send my pair to my in-laws. People often knock on their door or leave notes asking about it and they aren't ever offended so I would just do that. They always say no as they don't want someone there all the time. Apparently I don't count as am 'family' but I know a couple of people who've found grazing just by banging on doors :)
 
Not in that area but we rent 9/10 acres with a shelter, found this one on the internet but we have knockd on doors or left notes. If you dont ask you dont get. It is nice to be on your own.
 
We rent out a 6 acre field with shelter in Poulton/Singleton area. There are actually loads of little bits like it in the area, it's just a matter of finding out who to contact etc. the people who were renting ours over winter recently moved off but it has been snapped up again without us having to advertise.
 
A few people round here do it. If you see some fields not being used it is probably worth asking. A farmer would probably rather get some income than not if not doing anything with the fields.
 
I've rented land off of various people over the past 7 years.

Some have been very successful, some have been quite disasterous. It all depends who you rent off.

Farmers are your best bet. They tend to leave you be and won't interfere too much.

The worst tend to be older women who have had to give up riding for some reason. I've rented two fields off of this type and they either criticise everything you do or fall in love with your horse and beg to buy him off you. Or both.

Then you have people who have half an idea about horses - the ones who used to ride as children but haven't been near a horse for 40-odd years. These are the ones who will sneak your horse food - leaving piles of apples and potatoes in the field.

I've also dealt with an alcoholic who kept insisting I hadn't paid her when I had - she got a big chain and padlock and locked my horses in the field. Hubby had to cut them free with some bolt croppers and we swiftly moved them else where.

Currently I rent 5 acres off a retired couple with a smallholding. It's very nice - I've got use of stables and a menage and I know that they will keep an eye on them when I am not there. BUT the downside is that they have the final say on everything. They are nice people and I am grateful for them having us but at the same time it is not the same as having my own land. One day.....

Renting off the council is great as well. They tend to let you get on with things and the rent is normally very cheap. (I was paying £50 an acre per year until recently!!)
 
I found the land i rent by knocking on doors, one is a summer field and they arent on it for winter and i have a winter field were the guy isnt bothered if is trashed, do also have 2 acres with stables and bark pens thats mine, i was lucky saved £10,000 and was able to buy a small plot of land, rest is history!!!! i keep 14 and it costs the same as on on full livery!!!

Phone them and ask them if they have any land available to rent. They normally have plots of land reserved for future housing that aren't currently being used that they are happy to rent out.

Unfortunately for me, they've decided to build on mine this year. :(
