Hello!

My mare had a bad puncture wound infection in her pectoral muscle about 2 months ago (fireworks upset her and she ran into a hedge!) I had the vet out, he lanced and drained it. She was on antibiotics and it all returned back to normal, or so it seemed, however today when I was getting her rugged to go out, its started to go hot, hard and the muscle is looking a funny shape... much like it was when it was infected first time round.

Im getting the vet out tomorrow if I can, if not Tuesday and will pop her on bute, used the last of my norodine on Dillie after his castration darn it!! Not that it matters really as they appear not to be working with this infection.

But, does anybody know the next steps if an infection isnt clearing up? Will it be continuing with antibiotics, maybe a different type seeing as norodine doesnt seem to have done its job properly, lancing and starting over with the draining again?

Its annoying, but im not being able to ride much at the moment with uni, so i guess it is a bit of relief from the guilt of not riding!!

She may well have a foreign body still in there that is trying to work its way out. I would speak to the vet today if poss and ask if he would be happy with you doing some hot compresses on it to help draw it out. :)

possibly a piece of hedge is lodged in there ,so the infection has re-occured, i would ask the vet about this possibility:o

The problem with puncture wounds is that they have a tendency to heal from teh outside in, instead of the inside out. If, when healing, they have left a pocket of tissue which hasn't knitted back together, the bacteria continues to breed causing an abcess. This could possibly be what has happened with your mare, in which case the vet will probably need to put a drain in and then it's back on the antibitiotics.

Im not quite sure if that would work as its fully sealed up might have worth doing when it had been lanced as then the bit of hedge might have had some to escape from..

If there is a bit still in there, would it be silly to think that he may look at taking her into the clinic, to open it up again to see if there is anyway to get it out of the chest??

Thanks for the update, i have seen debris left behind in a wound come out 2years after the initial injury! Hope all goes well at the vets and she heals quickly:)

Deffo sounds like a foreign body is in there.
Glad the vet has taken her in to drain it and give it a good clean out, that should make a big difference, id ask him to swab and culture the contents, to find out exactly what bugs are growing, then you'll know if the broad spectrum antibiotic you get will clear it up.
