Replacement for haylage

I am having to stable my horse all day at the moment because my fields are so wet. He can't have hay because he coughs. Normally he is fine on haylage when he is only fed it overnight and gets grass during the day. But if I feed him haylage all the time he gets really bad diarrohea. Unfortunately he is also allergic to alfalfa. Can anybody suggest an alternative hay/haylage replacer?

I think the only alternative would be to source good hay and then steam it to deal with any dust. Any other kind of replacement forage/chaff is going to get very expensive.

a different haylage higher in fibre and lwoer in protein? One marketed for laminitics - not sure where you are but my supplier does a haylage that's almost haylike but still dust free and not heating

Can you not feed steamed or soaked hay?

thanks for your replies. I could steam hay but I always think feeding cold wet hay in winter can't be too pleasant. It only seems to have happened this year altho the haylage is from the same supplier. Might try a different brand and see if that helps.

PS Tried ReadyGrass last night instead of haylage. The boy was not impressed!
