I need to replace the wood on the ramp of my horse trailer. It is an Ifor Williams 505. The style which has wooden sides (about 25 years old). What would people suggest to use? We were thinking 18mm thick marine ply? Any other suggestions?

Also we are going to put new rubber matting on at the same time, where is the best place to by it from (live in Devon) and what sort of price should I expect to pay?

When I was researching this a while back, the consensus seemed to be buffalo board (it does have a more technical name). However, the trailer I bought recently had a rotten bit right at the top which I hadn't spotted when buying (stupid!) so OH has been on repair duty and he's used marine ply on the grounds that it doesn't have muck and wet sitting on it like the main floor could.

Re rubber mats, there is a company called Berkshire Horsebox Bits that does all sorts if you get no info from anyone local to you. Not sure what their shipping costs would be though.

No such thing as real marine plywood anymore. Personally I would use exterior Birch Plywood because it's got more plies so is stronger. Buffalo board is a plywood with a phenolic face. Usually Far Eastern or Birch Ply. Rubber mats about £25 each for 8x4 size near us.

I had the ramp on my horsebox done and used the 18mm marine ply with a rubber ramp cover with I bought from ebay

I wouldn't think you'd have a problem with basic marine ply - may be a bit tricky to get it stick on a coating. You're probably best trying colours on an offcut to get a match.

Whats on the ramp to start with?

For a 505 you may be able to find a "pre-made" rubber ramp mat to go on.

When I was looking for a ramp mat for my ancient trailer, I ended up buying a lightweight cheap stable mat off ebay for about £50 (inc delivery, which has done the job ok!
