Not strictly horse related, but Asian hornets can of course harm horses and certainly humans - and you all spend a lot of time outside so I hope not to upset anyone by asking here….

….If you spot an Asian hornet, report it. Their numbers are spiralling and this is very bad news for British ecology. Reporting sightings helps scientists track and monitor them - and destroy nests (not a job I’d volunteer for!).

There’s a free app you can download to do this called ‘Asian Hornet Watch’.

Thanks.

Yes just photo and report it. Also track what direction it flies off in, as then they may be able to find the nest and destroy it and the queen.

My OH is a part time bee keeper and we are down south, so always checking for hornets. And am aware that they are beginning to take a hold on the channel islands.

We've had several hornets here, not sure what type as didn't want to get too close but if I spot one this year will take more notice!

I had hornets nest in my stable last year I think they were British ones . I had to get an exterminator out. They certainly had an effect on the honeybees in my stable walls.

We live on the edge of oak woodland, and there are a frightening amount of hornets here. I know ours aren’t Asian (yet) but will keep an eye out for ‘different’ ones.

OH was stung last year (strummed a nest of them in the garden) but luckily no adverse reaction, but the year before I saw two people severely affected - very frightening.

This just popped up on my Facebook memories. 9 years ago I was in Sri Lanka and there were lots of these signs at Sigiriya rock. The only time they close it is when the hornets swarm which would be pretty terrifying!
