Hi all

Just to let you know if you don't already about this site;

http://www.horseaccidents.org.uk/

The more us riders collate information on all kinds of incidents whilst out riding, the better this info can be used by the BHS when lobbying for horse and rider safety.

It's not just road accidents, but all areas that are potential threat to riders and horses, for example dog attacks and wind turbine problems.

There is only one recorded turbine incident on there and only a handful of firework incidents , yet I have read many posts on here over the last few years about accidents and near misses (which you can also report) with both these problems.

Please report your accidents past and present so that the BHS can collect this data that they would never otherwise hear about.

I emailed BHS about road safety campaigns a while ago and they mentioned that loads of incidents go unreported and they do notice a lot mentioned on HHO don't get reported via the link...however, it isn't that well advertised. Maybe HHO can include a link on the website or make the post a sticky?

I know what you mean. This website was launched a while ago, but it's pretty obvious that it hasn't yet built a true picture of problems that horse riders can encounter whilst riding out, as hardly anyone knows it exists.

Does anyone know how to get this link put up as a sticky for a while?

When I spoke to the safety executive of the BHS last year, she said that accidents and dog attacks has increased by over 200% since the start of the horse accident website, due to the fact that people now had somewhere to actually report it other than the police who don't seem to collate their data.It is therefore VERY important that everyone reports incidents and especially near misses so they can get a true picture, with the data collected they will be in a far better position to lobby the powers that be to take this rising problem seriously.

I'm glad I stumbled across this, I was looking for the website a while ago and couldn't find it! Always handy to have bookmarked just incase.
I think it's such a good idea, it not only helps the BHS collect information but also allows riders to look at their local area and be aware of any risky areas.

The reporting of accidents and incidents involving us and our horses is absolute paramount to establish what is happening and where. It would be very useful if the BHS offered a little bit more information on the statistics they collect. Perhaps a table of accidents and incidents by type and geographical area for a given period.
Spread the word folks, the BHS Horse accident site is an extremely useful tool for us all

The BHS did list the stats in the latest instructor newsletter that I got yesterday.
I'm not sure what they intend to do with the information, but it makes sense to collate as much info on horse related incidents as possible.

One problem seems to be that people think they actually have to have an accident or at least fall off for it to be reportable.

Not the case! You all need to report incidents too. A lady was telling me only yesterday how a low flying fighter jet caused her horse to panic. She didn't come off, but it could have been really nasty.

Get reporting everyone!!

In relation to the low flying jet, the MOD offer a free phone advisory service for information about low flying aircraft/helicopters on 0800 51 55 44 8am-5pm

I agree. Great initative and producing interesting data. I agree with a previous comment that the BHS need to produce on their website the tabular information that they are putting out in hardcopy elsewhere.

In addition, the BHS have a paper leaflet that they hand out. I'd suggest that the BHS make it available on their www.horseaccidents.org.uk
website as a downloadable PDF.

It would then be esay to print. I'd suggest a target - this leaflet should be on the wall of every tackroom by the end of 2012.

What do you think?

BTW the BHS won a Prince Michael safety award for the website initative. Well done BHS!

My two children and I were walking along a lane (not a small lane one where two cars can pass and it's straight) it was about 4 10 in the evening and a pickup truck was coming up towards us and hit the flank of my pony with the side of his car his wing mirror consequently ripped off . This made my horse buck my 7yr old son off onto the rd and the horse in a panic tried to run up the bank on the side of the rd realised he couldn't go anywhere slipped and fell onto my 4 yr old daughter the driver of the car stopped 20 yards up the rd I realised to my horror it was the farmer where I keep my pony ! I shouted at him telling him he hit my pony and injured my kids he turned around said its my fault the horse kicked the car , he didn't even get out of the car say sorry nothing infant he drove off home leaving me wid two injured children and a stray pony I rung the police and ambulance and there was a witness but she is also from my yard and she will not say anything as she is too scared to in case bob tries to throw her two horses off the yard ! The police have not done enough as far as I am concerned he was charged with careless driving but not for leaving a scene of an accident ,
I am now having to deal with him harassing me to leave his land he doesn't care that my pony is not fit enough to move him today he padlocked my stable so I couldn't use it my rugs have been torn , I have done nothing wrong he caused the accident and now the pony and me are being punished ! Where is the law when it comes to people just cos he leases the land surely when he has caused the injuries and I have paid my rent up until the 1st of this month I should at least be Allowed a months notice to 1: get my pony well 2: time to find somewhere else ..... where is the law on this ! I need help this man is a nightmare !

Disgraceful prat. I* would find immediately somewhere new. Hire a trailer then ask the police to go with you while you move EVERYTHING out this place. Don't stay there any longer also try and find out who owns the land and tell them what happened he might get chucked off.. Also I hope the pony recovered from this awful incident

I have reported it to the bhs online and to the dvla the police did hardly anything the witness I had to the incident refuses to say anything as she is scared that he will throw her off the yard with her two horses so she is basically helping him another girl off another yard close to us has told us that he did exactly the same thing to her drove up the middle of the rd and didn't move over even tho there was plenty of room causing her horse to jump up a bank and is now terrified of traffic and caused the young girl distress but once again she will not make a statement I have to say I am very disappointed at the moral ethics the horsey people seem to have around me this was my children he went into and they were lucky to come out with severe bruising next time someone may not be soo lucky but without their cooperation as well I'm fighting a loosing battle its my word against his and he lies like rain is wet ! the man is old and I feel a danger on the rd and being a livery owner should be more aware of the fact that horses go up and down that lane all the time !
